I thought it should warrant its own thread, being that it covers such a wide scope and all...
By retro I mean anything that came out six months past the date you're posting, or earlier. what can i say? video games grow old fast like that. the exception is games that are still widely popular or still have a highly active community backing it, such as DotA, Starcraft, or CS. because lots of people are still playing those games rather frequently, they can hardly be classified as retro.
So, what were your favorite retro video games? Mine are...
Family Computer: Galaxian, Galaga, Pac-Man, Circus Charlie, Contra, the thing with the kid on the island
SNES: Street Fighter, DBZ fighter games, Super Mario World, Super
Mario Bros. 3
PSX: oh man... where to begin?! FFVII, FFVIII, FFIX, FFV and FFVI and Chrono Trigger (originally for SNES, but I never played 'em 'til they came out on teh PSX), FF Tactics, Xenogears, Legend of Dragoon, Legend of Legaia, Grandia, Suikoden II, Tomba! 1 and 2. I like to think the best console RPGs came out on the PSX (or were imported on the PSX from other systems like the Sega Saturn or the SNES), and for the most part, I daresay that I'm right.
Arcade: Tekken Tag Tournament, Project Justice, DDR! XD
Game Boy: Pokemon (in all its incarnations)... and that's about it.
PS2: FFX, Burnout Revenge, MGS2 and 3, Suikoden IV and V. There are a lot of others I can't remember just now, being that PS2 games are fairly recent and all, but this will do. |

Looking for nes double dragon 3 now. I miss my childhood memories.
May old mobile phone that was stolen had lot of family computer games like contra. I was even trying to install converted doom there. It also had supermario bros 1 and 3, final fantasy 1 (i think). I also miss playing pokemon there waaah ...
I had a megadrive before and my games were MK2, Ultimate MK3, Yu Yu Hakusho, basketball games, shinobi, streets of rage, ninja turtles, and many more. I was not into rpgs. I also had dragon ball there ^__^. |

You can't go wrong with Super Street Fighter II Turbo. FTW!!!!
And note that the word turbo is "necessary" here. If you don't buy turbo, you won't get the super moves like Ryu's shinkuu hadouken or Ken's Shoryuu-Reppa. Also, You can't access Akuma.
And don't buy the version without the Super, either, coz you won't get Fei Long (Liu Kang ripoff!!), T.Hawk, Cammy and Dee Jay. Those were the earlier versions of Street Fighter II, and, especially for the Championship edition, those games are belos par.
In hindsight, we should thank the gaming gods that they stopped adding words to the title and just cAme up with Street Fighter III. |

But what about Hyper Super Street Fighter Epsilon Delta Theta IV EX Platinum Version Zero?
Haha, I jest. I enjoyed the SF series, chief among them SF Alpha 3, but I can only truly love one 2D fighting game series, and that place in my heart is claimed by SNK's King of Fighters. I mean come on, the thing was just ill with combos and gameplay... not to mention the story was teh awesome. Although it's about as complex as SF's bizarre storyline, it was still pretty compelling.
Orochi Iori Yagami FTW! XD

^retro because they're from before the year 2000. some of them, anyway... but your objection is noted, hehe. and don't worry, FF games were my first bread and butter RPGs, so that makes me about as old as you. |

retro games eh? well, it can't be helped coz i grew up with my uncle (now residing in Alberta) played Super Mario Bros. (reminds me of the trivia that Mario's surname was Mario ~_~) and Tetris (ahh such games ~_~)
a few years after that, here comes SNES and i was hooked in playing Super Mario World and Killer Instinct (actually, my KI cartridge is the only thing I kept because it's black). also, i played MK3.
then there came N64 and i was amazed (back then) by the graphics...so i bought Pokemon Staduim. since then, i've chronologically grow old and lost interest in console games...~_~ |

I'm still entertaining myself with Tekken Tag Tournament at arcades. Then Starcraft when I'm at home. |

Tekken is teh best! Tag Tourney in particular. I really enjoyed that system, esp. on the PS2. |

I have some issues with the PS2 port, though. Kazuya's limbs are somewhat stunted, and some character's sizes are inconsistent with the arcade version. There're also combos that can't be done in the console version and vice versa.
But anyway, those are just nitpicks. Still the best fighting game ever. |

the one TC thing i've always wanted to do was go through a game solo, but with dual pistols. never tried it, since well, i'd look like an idiot if i did, but these days... hmm, y'know? |

well it would take twice the effort that a normal player would do...although i am imagining it, i think it's hard for me to do so (darn it, i gained weight) |

I tried dual pistols long time ago (high gradeschool/ low highschool) at Sta Lucia arcade. The game was Terminator 2. lots of fun and more than twice the effort to do well. |

...but still i think it's possible...in other shooting games i mean.
i don't know if Terminator 2 has pedals or not, but Time Crisis had. which reminds me last Saturday, i was playing Time Crisis 4 and i think i got pawned in Stage 1! argh...not to mention i never finished playing TC2 on that same day. but what i could say about TC4 is, it was worth playing it. i could aim more precisely in TC4 than in TC3 (it has something to do with the position of the screen...) |

Here's a list of my fave retro games.
PC Platform (Includes emulators)
Chrono Trigger - 'nuff said
Mario Teaches Typing - silly at first, but its challenging at later levels!
Bomber Man - try beating level 20th!
Half-Life - the original arguably has the edge over the sequel storywise...
NfS: Underground 2 - edgin' for reckless speed?
NfS: Most Wanted - feed the red-and-blues some smoke!
Family Computer
Street Fighter - it used to be 8 characters...or am I smoking crack?
Super Mario Bros. - ya just hafta luv those mushrooms and sunflowers
Battle Tank - I can't recall if this is the right title, just a couple of tanks trying to shoot down the eagle insignia.
PS (Includes PSOne and the box-type original)
Final Fantasy VII - who can forget?
Final Fantasy VIII - aahh, whenever sang my songs, on the stage...
PS2
Devil May Cry 2 - linear and repetitive, but ass-whoopin' action!
RAW vs Smackdown - I'll see ya tonight, on Wrestlemania! |

true, true. i do love them great story, bad graphics RPG's.
along this vein (although they may not qualify) i've always considered Xenogears and Suikoden II as my two favorite console RPG's of all time. no amount of graphical muscle can replace these two in my book (although if only for the fact that it is a continuation of the series, Suikoden V comes pretty darn close). |
