As fun as epic gaming is, I am starting to think that some of the newer players are not enjoying it to the fullest. I mean, the players are supposed to be epic; not a set of complicated stats. Plus I would like one last go at our beloved Pharagos world before it gets a major facelift in 4.0.

That is why I am starting this poll. If Chalice loses, then I'll sadly abandon it in favor of something else.

What's that third choice, you say? Cool

The March of Alazlam: A War campaign from levels 10-15 featuring the Death Knight's bid to drive the Mandrakor from Daemonscar.

Character Creation Mechanics:
Flavor: You are a Mandrakori veteran who has seen many wars. Set the soul of the fallen GithWar hero to rest.
Ability Score Generation: One set 5d6, discard two lowest via Invisible Castle. 30pt buy if set is unsatisfactory (DM's discretion). The "standard" Mandrakori is using elite array. You are stronger than a standard Mandrakori.
Races allowed: Human, Half-Orc, Half-Elf, Hobgoblin (effective LA+0), Spellscale, Human Dragonborn of Bahamut, Redspawn Arcaniss (MM4, plus you'll have a private talk with the DM), Minotaur, Ogre. Dragonblooded Human, Half-Dragon.

The Half-Minotaur and Half-Ogre are allowed, with one exception: instead of large size, this template bestows powerful build.

In addition, I am allowing the Scro: The conquered Orc tribes of the Mandrakor have already experienced 3 generations of Mandrakori Military training; as such, a strange subrace of sub-Orc have arisen; the Scro.

The Scro are detailed in Dragon#339, and I am adding these abilities:
*+1 on attack rolls VS Gith: The Mandrakor have trained the Scro to fight their hated enemy with effectiveness.
*Bonus Languages: Add Gith.
*Favored Class: Change from Monk to Swordsage.

Other races are available with the DM's permission.
Suggested Base Classes: Note that I would prefer low magic. But heh, if you want to play Arcana, I can play it nastier.
PHB: All. However, note that Mandrakori rarely become paladins or wizards.
CW: Hexblade, Swashbuckler
CAdv: Spellthief, Scout
CArc: Warlock (although I would like the Invoking class from Dragon magic better. What's the name again?), Warmage
CD: Favored Soul.
ToB: Crusader, Swordsage, Warblade.
ToM: Binder (bring your own vestige copy!)
EPH: Psychic Warrior, Wilder, Soulknife.
Prestige Classes: Discuss with DM.
Starting level:
If you have LA+0, you start as a level 10 character with halfway XP to level 11.
If you have LA+1, you start as a level 10 character, LA removed, with minimum XP.
If you have LA+2, you start out as a level 9 character, LA removed, with minimum XP.
If you have LA+3, you start out as a level 7 character, LA removed, with minimum XP.
Higher LA should have an intimate talk with the DM. Laughing Laughing
Starting Age:
If humanoid lifespan, start as middle aged. (See PHB chapter6 for details)
If half-elf lifespan, start as 40.
Starting Gear: Regardless of starting level, start with standard equipment for a level 10 PC. Max individual gear =half starting gear.

Half-ogre is no longer a template; it is now its own race.

Low magic items or preferrably no casters?

Preferably no casters. Magic Items are fair game. In fact, I'd advice all aspiring rogues to grab one of them truedeath crystals.

Races of Destiny.

No casters. I assume that the same is true with psionic counterparts.

Anyway, warmage an exception or oversight?

No it wasn't. I said I prefer no casters, but I wasn't banning them. If it fits in flavor, it's okay, ultimately, to have a Mandrakori caster. Most of them will be sorceres with Dragon heritage, I suppose, though they'd also have a decent warmage following.

I still don't know my commitment since I don't know my situation next month.
I'm throwing questions:

Power level? unoptimized, normal, optimized, powergamed, munchkin?
Gregor is not very optimized but powergamed character.
Dicki is both optimzed and powergamed character.
Agis is a normal character.

Mortality rate? Should we expect death every now and then (and thus reserved character readied) or resurrection magic is pretty much available (scrolls, etc)?

I think I want to play a full blooded minotaur (LA +2) with a +1 template maybe Draconic (RotD). Another possibility is the feral template (-8 int ouch!) with a flavor of a talented feral minotaur schooled by Mandrakori for its potential. Lolth-touched is attractive but it does not fit with my character concept.

Another possibility is hobgoblin psywarrior. Is dwarf is available?

No dwarf, unfortunately. The Mandrakori have no dwarven allies. (Unless Revan contradicts me here)

Make optimized characters. Characters are expected to die, and unless you have a party cleric with lots of Diamond dust, ressurection is few and far between. But I won't be using arcanists... too much.

In any case, a decent backstory is required. To prevent weirdo Half-Minotaur Half Goliath Lolth touched mockeries of nature Laughing

I like the full blooded minotaur with Draconic template (is that the right name?). Draconic templates have the added plus of elongating your lifespan a bit (getting rid of the nasty middle age requirement, hehe). Lolth-touched, howver, are ill-advised. Mandrakori prefer Draconic deities iirc.

Note that this is a 1x a month thing, and it will only be finished when 4.0 comes out. Think of it as one last hurrah with the Pharagos setting.

That is, if majority would want to play here. maybe even some of the newer ones like juaberman and Q. Note, however, to the noobs; Characters will die.

Btw, if you voted for "march of Alazlam", it'd be nice if you roll stats now. (Just so you have time to conceptualize builds, assuming of course that this campaign is the one I end up running.)Via InviCastle. And then just link your roll in this thread.

Questions?

I direct you to here: http://invisiblecastle.com/rolldice.py

On character name, type the name of, duh, your character (since you don't have a character yet, I'm hereby commanding you, erwin, to use the name "Johaina" Laughing )

On number of rolls, type "6"

On dice, type "5d6.takeHighest(3)"

On note, type "March of Alazlam stat roll"

Finally, click roll the dice. Then link the result here.

Warning. Do this but once. If you wanna try it 1st, use a character name other than Johaina.

So far, I see a landslide towards The March of Alazlam.

So I'll now ditch Epic, and prepare for one last hurrah on the world of Pharagos.

Unless poll changes dramatically over the next two days, which I doubt.

Onward to character creation then!

Some DM advice:
*Someone take a War cleric. Or failing that, a favored soul.
Revan wrote:
Okay, getting back to work on the Ruby and Onyx courts.

The pantheon is more or less built around the officers of a standard chess set: King, Queen, Bishop, Knight, Rook.

Rough concepts for portfolios:

Knights: Combat. Clan Darkhope sees both the Black and Red Knights as their patrons.
Red Knight: Adapting the Red Knight from FR, the Lady of Battle, Strategy, and Tactics. Domains: Planning, War, Law,
Black Knight: Offhand, thinking of adapting the Master of the Wild Hunt from Dragon 342. Basically, the Black Knight should represent the individual, predatory, hunting aspects of combat, as opposed to the organized form of war promoted by the Red Knight.

Rooks: Strength, power, and the elements.
Red (The Tower): Patron of Fire, Earth
Black : Patron of Air and Water.

Bishops: Spellcraft, Knowledge.

Clan: Would be nice to choose one Major Clan, then if you are feeling creative, detail your family lineage. Maybe your father was killed in the blast from the Song of Destruction. Etc. etc..

Revan wrote:
Clan Ordo
"We are bred for war."

A clan of disciplined fighters, the men and women of Clan Ordo are more soldier than warrior. "Only through discipline, training, and focus can a Mandrakori reach the pinnacle of his abilities", this is the core of Clan Ordo. Their philosophy is that of personal perfection and rule by the strongest.
(Preferred Disciplines of the Ninefold Dragon Path: Iron Heart, White Raven)

Clan Darkhope
"You were out thought and out fought, and you wonder why you lost?"

A clan of iconoclasts, freethinkers, strategists, and tricksters, Clan Darkhope are masters of intrigue, sabotage, assassination, and politics. "In the dark, a single knife is as good as a thousand swords at dawn." Through cunning and guile, a Darkhope warrior can break the will and find the weaknesses of a vastly superior foe.
(Preferred Disciplines of the Ninefold Dragon Path: Shadow Claw(Hand), Twilight Dragon(Setting Sun), Diamond Mind)

Revan wrote:
The Wildrunners

Quote: "Fury is our birthright!"

The third major clan among the Mandrakori is Clan Wildrunner. In many ways the antithesis of Ordo and Darkhope, Wildrunner emphasizes chaos, raw, untamed power, and primal oneness with the natural order, with Clan Wildrunner of course being the highest predators on the foodchain.

-sterotypical wild warrior clans.
-attracts many of the new Theiran allies of Mandrakor, as well as their orcish allies.
-favored classes: Barbarian, Ranger, Scout, Druid

And then, we have thralls and allies,

Revan wrote:
The Battle Thralls

When the Mandrakori arrived in Pharagos, their first major project after securing their new homelands was the subjugation of the various monstrous humanoids surrounding Nordmaar. Using forcs, guile, and diplomacy, the Mandrakori brought these various races to heel, and then made them battle-thralls.

The goblins of Nordmaar were the first to fall to the Mandrakori. The goblin High Chiefs were goaded into battle by Mandrakor the Guardian. As the battles raged, the disciplined forces of Clan Ordo held the line while strike teams made up of Darkhope assassins eliminated the warlords and commanders of the goblin tribes. Demoralized by the loss of their leaders, the goblin tribes capitulated.

In an unexpected development, the hobgoblin warlords then approached Clan Ordo and offered to sign a pact of alliance with the Mandrakori. Clan Ordo accepted, and the hobgoblins of Nordmaar defected en masse to the Mandrakori Clans, and a significant number hold authority among Clan Ordo's military chain of command.

The next target of Mandrakori expansion were the orcs. The most powerful faction of monstrous humanoids in Nordmaar, the orcs had always been fractured and disorganized, but the coming of a worthy enemy galvanized the orc tribes like never before. Even with the aid of the goblins and hobgoblins, the campaign was a long, hard slog. Eventually, the orcs were subdued. Clan Wildrunner absorbed many of these captured orcs, prizing their untamed fury.

The last faction brought to heel were the giant races, who would provide the heavy assault backbone to the Mandrakori Crusade.

Theira
Once the most troublesome and rebellious provinces of the ancient overkingdom of Bartonia, the Theirans have always been among the most rough and tumble societies of the Eastern Pharagos (OOC: the medieval Europe-themed areas). Theiran society is clan based, rather than along the more obviously feudal lines of Bartonia, Siria, and Elenia. Power is held by the mightiest within a particular clan. Leadership is very flexible within family lines.

Located in the hill and mountain countries to the north of Siria, Theirans have developed a ruggedly individualistic streak of self-reliance and meritocracy. Beset on all sides by the giant races of the hills, the orcs of the Great Waste, and their rapacious neighbors to the south, the Theirans learned to become skilled woodsmen, horsemen, and ambushers, with many infamous adventurers and monster hunters having their origins among these rough and ready peoples. Stalwart Theirans were among the backbone of the Alliance force that eventually pushed back the Mandrakori Crusade.

The Gith Incursion was nowhere near as devastating on the Theirans as on the other Remnant nations due to the Theirans relatively decentralized clan leadership. The Night of Bloody Knives claimed the lives of the newly proclaimed "Chief-of-Chiefs", but many of the warlords and chieftains never even attended the coronation ceremony that was the target of the Gith assassins. Each clan retreated to its hilltop redoubts, and even when those were assaulted with airships and dragons, the Theirans persevered, abandoning what could not be held and living off the land where necessary.

At this time, many Theiran clans came into contact with the Mandrakori who decided to side with the Alliance against the Gith. Out of this strange partnership of former enemies, a pact was formed between the Theiran Remnant and the Mandrakori Clans. Joined together and acting as a single force, the Theirans and their Mandrakori allies are poised for the moment when they can have their revenge on the Gith Invaders.

FLAVOR: Scandinavian, Scot , Russian (Norse and Celt Mythos with possibly a bit of Eastern European flavor thrown in.)

I will also be making extensive use of the supplement, "Heroes of Battle". Revan, I need help with Mandrakor military structure...

Timeline: Roughly 3 months from the Night of Screams.

What else... Hmm, I will be entertaining questions as I go.

The campaign will be handled in the following way:
*There is going to be down time in between game days. A month is a long time, though. So I will be setting up RP encounters here. As a rule, most (meaning >50%) of the RP will be done here online (this includes item purchasing, identification, selling etc). The online RP, however, is restricted to within the fortress city of Cadia. Interact with the NPC's there, but for simplicity's sake, let's leave Cadia on game days only. Razz

*I will set up an OoC thread and IC thread soon on the Online RPG section. Check it out.

*For that matter, would it be problematic for you guys if I require an online copy of your character?

*Lastly, other than Heroes of Battle, I am going to make extensive use of Weapons of Legacy. As such I am accepting requests for a legacy item. Just PM me the type of item you want, and I'll work on it. (Also note that I will require a detailed backstory for the item that has three major events, if you want it.)

There. Razz

This is more or less war-themed campaign. I expect an action-packed™ adventure.

Can I know the players' tentative characters? Race and classes.

I think I wanna play feral dragonkin from Clan Wildrunners.

Feral Dragonkin
Like how the kobolds celebrate a koboldling with manifested draconic heritage, dragonkins of Clan Wildrunners celebrate a one of their own with feral blood. To them, a feral dragonkin is a fury incarnate and its existence in the clan is a blessing from the Gods.

I think I'll use War Mind prestige class. I'm thinking of burning 2 feats to satisfy its requirements or dip 1 level of psywarrior. My character traces its psionic origin to gem dragons.

_____
And oh, I think the best classes for this game are War Mind, Warshaper, Warhulk and Warrior. Very Happy

Thinking of a crusader of the red knight. Reading up on the known clans. I'll have to start with a race. The ever classic human is too normal nowadays. =/

How about half-dragon human? Or draconic human? or hobgoblin?

Ah yes, maybe a dragonborn of Bahamut might make good stuff. Good thing the campaign's not going to start until a longer while, there's a possibility that I might lose my on-hand source materials.
