It's a sad fact. Most modern Magic: The Gathering players are not aware of the storyline behind our favorite game. I don't blame them, though. Trying to figure out the story from the cards alone is a task near impossible. One really has to look for the novels and comic books.

So, I'm starting up this thread for those with at least mild curiosity about the storyline. If you have anything, anything at all that you wish to ask, ask here. I'll try to answer the question to the best of my ability. Others are invited to answer, as well.

I'm proficient with the following arcs (M:tG storyline is verrryyyy long, and i haven't had the opportunity to read up on everything):
*Brothers' War
*Artifacts Cycle (Saga Block)
*Masques' Cycle (except Prophecy)
*Rath Cycle
*Ravnica Block

I have some knowledge on the following arcs, but I might give answers that are not 100% accurate:
*Ice Age Trilogy
*homelands
*Invasion Cycle
*Otarian Lore
*Mirrodin (or Argentum, or whatever you decide to call it)
*Time Spiral

I suck at the following arcs:
*Kamigawa
*The Dark
*Mirage Block

A few notes:
*Dominarian years are measured in AR (Argivian Reckoning). 0 AR is the year the brothers were born. Specifically, Urza was born on the first day of the year while Mishra was born on the last.
*At about 60 AR, give or take a few years, the Brothers' War came to a cataclysmic end at the Forest-Isle of Argoth. The Golgothian Sylex was activated, Dominaria was almost destroyed for the first time, and an unnatural Ice Age began to engulf the whole plane.
*The Thran were an ancient race, most probably human. (The metathran, however, who were biologically engineered by Urza to emulate the Thran, were bluish Humanoids) They were known for their prowess in Artifice. Thrived at around -4000AR. Note the negative. Urza practically worshipped the Thran, and was horrified to know that the Phyrexians are their descendants.
*Planeswalkers are not gods. gods can kick the crap out of them, generally. However, they might as well be deities, for they are immortal and made of pure mana. Of note is their ability to 'walk from plane to plane, somthing that gods could not do, and mortals could only do with the help of potent ambulators/portals. More than one 'walker have created artificial plaNES.
*The blind eternities are the space between the planes. It is devoid of most things that sustain mortals, and thus non-'walkers are not encouraged to take the hand of a 'walker when he's about to do his stuff.
*I know nothing about Kami.
*Most recently, Planeswalkers were nerfed (in flavor) to justify WotC's decision to design cards for them. Like most recent decisions of that company, I think that sucks.

Now. Onward to questions Razz

Having started at Kamigawa block, I'm somewhat proficient with its flavor and story.

Basically it's an old ancient plane filled with Kami, who were at one point angered by some mortal act. This act turned out to be committed by Lord Konda, who stole That Which Was Taken. His daughter, Michiko, with the aid of Toshiro Umezawa, uncover the mystery behind the stolen thing, and they soon discover that the item is actually a living kami, plucked from the spirit realm. It is further learned that the kami is linked to Michiko, and they fuse to form an ultra-powerful crime fighting being (no joke). Toshiro, meanwhile, having sworn an oath to the Kami of Night's Reach, is sent to Dominaria at the end, where he wakes up blind in a swamp.

And that's about it.

Welcome juaberman!

I will assume that you are asking about the exploits of the Weatherlight crew, not of the Weatherlight itself.

(again, correct me, anyone, if I say something incorrect.)

What we know of the Weatherlight is this: It is a flying ship. Breathtaking, yes, but not the only flying ship in Dominaria. Thus there is nothing spectacular about it.

Except it's crew. Captain Sisay of Jamuraan descent. Gerard, last of the Capashen. Hanna, daughter of of the Tolarian Academy's Headmaster. And speaking of Tolaria, Ertai, most notorious Tolarian student since Teferi himself.

And of course, Tahngarth the Talruum Minotaur, Orim the Samite Healer, cursed (but Gerard's best friend) Crovax of an elite urborg caste, Mirri the Cat Warrior, Rofellos the Llanowar emissary, and scores of other legends.

That's right. Legends. For many among their number will be great personalities on the ballad that is the Phyrexian Invasion. Legends even before that, for they have travelled the planes in their flying ship.

Who owns the Weatherlight?
Sisay is the Weatherlight captain. And for a time, she owned it as well. However, it was said that Gerard, barely out of his teens, gauded the captain into betting ownership of Weatherlight over a game of chance. Sisay lost (1). Gerard retained her as captain, though, saying that he knows nothing on sailoring.

In any case, Gerard became part of the crew soon after that, and became fast friends with Sisay.

On Crovax (Which we see a fantasy equivalent of the nanny complex)
Crovax is an odd case amongst the Weatherlight's crew. For one thing, he wasn't even part of the crew. For some reason, it just so happened that he is on very very good terms with Gerard. And since he owns the ship, who can argue?

Crovax was always a disturbed soul. Beaten many times by his father in an attempt to give him the Urborg equivalent of proper upbringing, he found sole solace in the form of Selenia, his family's captive angel. But that, too, ended when his father saw him, fresh from "upbringing", in the soft embrace of Selenia. (Selenia is bound to the whole family, meaning she will pleasure Crovax when he commands him to. But ultimately, the head of the family, Crovax' father, is her true master). They were forbidden from seeing each other.

But all is not lost, we see Crovax, now a man, inheriting the stone which commands Selenia from his evil father. He breaks the stone and asks (not commands) the angel to marry her. She consents.

A ceremony on the Weatherlight was prepared (Sisay, as ship captain, can initiate marriages I think). However, before an actual marriage was done, Selenia was summoned by another stone to Urborg. The Weatherlight pursues.

Monsters beyond even Urborg were attacking Crovax' estate. And, as the heroes that be, the Weatherlight assists. (2)

Crovax ventured alone. He killed many, but that was not in his mind. He was looking for Selenia.

He eventually found her, with scores of slain monsters on her perfect feet. But she was summoned too late. Crovax' father was already dead.

It matters not. Crovax pries the CommandStone form his father's dead fingers, and once again declares Selenia free. A dreadful mistake.

At this time, the puppet master pulled his strings. Apparently of Rathi origin, these monsters were sent by a man who entered a business deal with Crovax' father. He sold Selenia to her, complete with a third Command Stone.

Selenia was summoned to Rath.

Gerard and Vuel
Can someone else take this? I'm done with storytelling now. But if no one replies, I'll fill this in next time.

Footnotes:
(1) Urza actually interfered here. He was in the same tavern as a blind seer. And he wanted Gerard to "inherit his legacy". As you will see, Urza shows up multiple times, however brief, in the Weatherlight's history (of course. He created the darned ship, after all.)
(2) Of this episode, only one fallen among the Weatherlight crew is worth noting: Rofellos of Llanowar was slain in this event.

-->juaberman, you're first question demands a verrrryyyy long answer! Laughing I put in stuff that would lead you to ask more questions. More specific questions, I hope. Razz

*It looks similar to a wizards' duel, although the scale is much larger. 'Walkers have the ability to draw mana from the mere memory of the lands that he has seen, whereas the wizard of norm need to draw it from the land he stands upon. Needless to say, this gives planeswalkers near unlimited supply of power. (You play lands from your hand, which is representative of a 'walkers mind) Supposedly, there is a way to destroy these memories (stone rain etc), but as of the novels, the memories of the land do not appear at the 'Walkers' sides during a duel.
*They can craft shades of creatures he has encountered, commanding them to do his bidding. Thus, it is possible to see a 'walker "summoning" creatures to his side to attack his opponent. Curiously, the shade of a unique (aka legendary) creature implodes upon seeing an exact replica of itself in the battlefield.
*Of course, you can do it the old fashioned way as well, throwing lightning bolts, lava axes at your enemy. that is usually the preferred tactic of a red 'walker.
*Lately, some 'walkers have offered their service to another in exchange for a small bribe in mana. This is probably due to the reduced powers they have been experiencing since the mending. Note however, that these 'walkers are very much like mercs. You can only buy so much of their loyalty, and will leave your side if they take too much damage.

Did I answer it, juaberman? Make follow-up questions if you like Very Happy After cpmleting the Weatherlight chapter, if no one else asks, I will do a write-up on the brother that, in my opinion, is more badass: Mishra.

I don't want to go into details. Long story short, Selenia was slain by Crovax himself, completing the curse on Crovax. With the fall of Volrath as evincar of Rath, Phyrexia took the now evil-consumed Crovax as a replacement. We all know by now that Crovax has become Ascendant Evincar.

Anyway, as for the rest of the Weatherlight crew: Gerrard, and the others entered the portal out of Rath. Unfortunately, Ertai had to stay behind to maintain concentraion on openning the portal. Eventually, he was left behind in the hands of hundreds of Phyrexians. Ertai died, and Yawgmoth revived him as a Phyrexian.

Meanwhile, the Weatherlight ended up in a topsy-turvy plane where everything is placed in layers and where residents live on top of each other. Later on the plane is named Mercadia.

@juaberman: well, this is as far as I know:
Sisay- captain and "owner" of the Weatherlight
Hanna- ship navigator, also an accomplished artificer
Squee- cabin hand (he scrubs floors); interestingly enough, Squee gets a lot of favors from a lot of characters within the story.
Gerrard- just another swashbuckling character; the hero of the story
Mirri- scout; recoinessance
Starke- don't know what he is in the crew, although he has a very interesting background story (ask, if you must); he's the traitor in this band of adventurers
Crovax- just some widower found mourning in Urborg; eventually becomes a major enemy in the Mercadian Masks series
Karn- a piece of the Urza's legacy artifacts, he's a part of the Weatherlight ship
Orrim- the medic, of course
Ertai- whatever an expert of the arcane arts can be in a crew

All of them have cards in magic, btw.

Welcome Q!

Crovax the Cursed was a Stronghold card, so I'm assuming here thAT mnightsilver's rather short version of it did indeed seal the deaL. Speking of which;

Welcome mnightsilver! However, I think you skipped out the whole Rath cycle by going straight to Mercadian Masques.

I'll try to do it more detailed...

juaberman wrote:

Selenia was ultimately sworn to Volrath, Evincar of Rath. He was formerly known as Vuel, who was Gerard's stepbrother. I've not read Rath and Storm personally, so I might have a few wrong detaIls here and there.

For some reason I failed to catch, Volrath hates Gerard. Really hates Gerard. We know he kidnapped Sisay to draw in his half-brother (and also the Weatherlight, because Volrath's Phyrexian Masters want it destroyed).

So, again, being the heroes that they are, went to Rath head on. They kept Ertai in charge of the Planar portal, and there he began to get haunted by shadows. There they meet Starke (who I know little about), got attacked by the Predator (a flying ship commanded by the evil Greven il-vec and crewed by scores of Moggs), and realize that Selenia now works for the other side. (On this note, Crovax got Clairvoyance of it, when the angel "whispered" to him. See card, "whispers of the muse")

Revan's got Rath and Storm, methinks. He can sure tell a better story, too. I'm switching to bullet-point:

*After the initial attack by the Predator, Karn got stolen, Tahngarth was taken prisoner, and Gerard fell to the Skyshroud forest below. He somehow survived, and eventually met a new ally; Eladamri, Lord of Leaves in Skyshroud.
*Gerard eventually gets to Volrath's stronghold. There he reunites with Crovax (who was split from the crew somehow, can't remember), and the two go through the vast amounts of obstacles together. But eventually, their path was blocked by Selenia herself. Crovax refuses to fight her, so Gerard was forced to duel the angel alone. He proves no match. However, in the moment that Selenia attempts to deliver the killing blow, Crovax saved his best friend by delivering a sword strike at Selenia. Apparently the blow was fatal.
Crovax killed Selenia.
*Distraught by what he has done, Crovax leaves Gerard alone and wandered the Stronghold, sanity leaving him inch by inch. Our hero pursues on his own, finds Volrath, and kills him. Or so he believed. He was only fighting a shapeshifter, for Volrath didn't want to face Gerard head on. Nevertheless, he saves Sisay, and they run to the Weatherlight to escape, the Predator hot at their heels.
*Mirri, who was also in the stronghold (again, don't ask me why), sees Crovax wandering off, muttering to himself. The curious cat warrior followed. The insane Crovax spots her, and slaughters the cat in a blind fury.
*All seems lost for the Weatherlight, as the Predator comes closing in. It is no use; the Phyrexian vessel was just faster. But then, a spark of hope. Ertai was apparently conversing to the shadow creatures thaT have been haunting him. He convinces one of these creatures, who are bound yet disjoint from material planes, to call to Tolaria for help. Help the Weatherlight, for they will not escape Rath in time.
Urza Planeswalker then appears and 'walks the ship out to a raNDom plane. Then he blinks away yet again from our story. Ertai is left behind, and Greven-il Vec just spotted him. At least he has something to return to his master.

Yes. For some strange reason, he keeps on getting brought back to life. This skill of his gets a lot funnier come Invasion block, though.. Laughing Laughing

Ah, look at these wiki boy_bakal found: http://wiki.mtgsalvation.com/article/Timeline

It sure answers lots of your potential questions. Guess I don't have to keep doing this. It is detailed but not very... storytelling. So ask away if you still have questions.

"A battle tomorrow seems inevitable," Tawnos said. Urza nodded in agreement. "and with any luck, this war will finally be over then. Last day of the year, last day of the war..."

The aging man shuffled in his seat as he clutched the Mightstone hanging on his neck. "Yes. And on the last day, we are equal."

"What was that you said?" The younger, but still quite old man asked.

Urza stood up, grabbing his walking staff, "Don't mind it," the whiter-haired of the two replied, "it was just the ramblings of an old man. Now, let us discuss strategy for tomorrow..."

-Urza's Tower in Argoth
One day before the Golgothian Sylex was activated.

Mishra
...was born on the last day of 0 AR, whereas his brother was born on the first day of the same year. As such, Mishra has always claimed, since they were children, that on his birthday, Urza was not older; thus they are equal.

A number of years after the Brothers' birth, their mother died. Their father, an Argivian noble, married another member of the aristocracy. This woman ignored the boys at best and showed them contempt at worst. In 10 AR, their father fell ill, and he arranged for them to travel to the excavation sites of Tocasia, to whom he had done a favor some years earlier. They were apprenticed to her, and unlike other children sent to her camps, they remained with her.

Tocasia's camp was located in the desert, and was populated by the more modern of the desert tribesmen, called the Fallaji, and by young nobles who were sent there by their parents. Through the years, Mishra grew to be the polar opposite of his brother, for his brother was cold and favored the artifacts they excavated. Mishra instead enjoyed interacting with the people at the dig sites and participated in almost all of the digs, and eventually came to oversee all of the digs done at Torcasia's camp.

The two brothers were steadfast friends, however. And while they argued often, they were always able to shrug it off after looking at the Glimmer Moon together.

While studying the Thran, an ancient race whose machines were the main reason for Tocasia's camp, Urza discovered that all of the sites where large amounts of Thran devices were found seemed to circle around a central point. However, the center itself was an inaccesible patch of mountains, and exploring it was nigh impossible.

Until the archaeologists found the remains of a Thran ornithopter.

The brothers were able to repair the ship with their extensive knowledge, and on Mishra's 16th birthday they ventured forth with Tocasia and found the ruins of an old Thran city. Urza named the place Koilos (Thran. secret), and began exploring it's caves. inside they found a great machine powered by a large powerstone; but then there was an explosion... And when they came to, the powerstone was split into two, and each brother was holding half of it.

After the explosion each brother became increasingly hostile towards one another. the stones seemd to have odd effects on both living and non living things. Urza's stone, which he named the Mightstone, seemed to make things stronger than normally possible, while Mishra's stone sapped the strength from both artifacts and living creatures. Urza named this the Weakstone (which Mishra resented). Another effect the visit to Koilos had was that Mishra had disturbing dreams about darkness, trying to lure him to somewhere.

One night after drinking Mishra went to confront Urza and tried to take the stone from him, the fight was heard around the camp, and when Tocasia tried to stop the brothers she was caught in between the power surging from the two stones and died. Mishra, ashamed at what he had caused, fled into the desert during the confusion that followed.

Rakiq to Raki

His journey came to an abrupt halt, however. For soon the Suwaardi, a militant faction of the Fallaji, found him, captured him, took his possessions (including the Weakstone), and turned him into a rakiq (slave). His luck has not entirely run out, however. One of the former diggers at Tocasia's site, a Fallajian named Hajar, recognized him and convinced his qadir (sultan?) that Mishra was an educated man. So the Suwaardi qadir turned Mishra into his son's tutor, and soon the son became fond of the Argivian.

One night, Mishra had another disturbing dream, of a mechanical parody of nature. Waking from this screaming, he had no time to dwell on it, for a giant mechanical beast in the shape of a dragon appeared from under the sands and started rampaging. The Qadir was killed in the confusion. Mishra and Hajar used this confusion to retrieve the Weakstone, so Mishra could weaken it, but to everyone's surprise, Mishra found he could directly control it.

The Qadir's son became the new Qadir, and appointed Mishra his Raki, or Wizard, and set about using the dragon engine, or Mak Fawa, to unify the Fallaji people under the Suwwardi.

Soon Mishra became the qadir's active hand in the subjugation of the other Fallajian tribes. One by one they fell, or surredered, to the might of Mishra's Makfawa.

The River of Blood
Then his qadir became ambitious. Soon he challenged the Warlord of Kroog for the ownership of Fallajian sacred land that had fallen to the Yotians. In a bid for power, the young Fallajian offered peace talks with the old but proud Warlord (by this time Urza had, through wit, married the warlord's daughter, Princess Kayla Bin-Kroog, so he could read the Jaluum Tome owned by the Royal family).

Mishra and Urza met, after five years, on those peace talks, albeit on opposite sides. After a short talk, they agreed that they should reconcile. The past is past.

The peace talks took a sour turn at that moment, however. The Warlord, riled at the impertinence of the boy qadir, drew his sword and unveiled his secret weapon; Ornithopters equipped (without Urza's knowledge) with alchemists fire.

Mishra looked on in horror as the Ornibombers slaughtered Fallajians en masse. Screaming "Betrayer!" at his brother, he went to his qadir's aid. The makfawa made short work of the bombers. The younger qadir delivered a fatal wound to the older Warlord.

Kayla Bin-Kroog was now queen.

The Fallajians now began an aggresive war campaign. More and more the Argivians, Yotians were driven back. But all was not lost. For if the Fallajians had a raki in Mishra, the Yotians now have a Prince-consort, a Protector of the Realm named Urza.

Ashnod the Uncaring
Soon Mishra encountered the Zegonians. Their greatest defense against Mishra was a staff with a skull head that had enough power to weaken his dragon engine, much like a Weakstone. For days a battle ensued; but even without the Makfawa, the Suwaardi by now were a far superior force in numbers. And to make matters worse, the Zegon artificer was about to betray her own people.

The voluptous Ashnod came into Mishra's tent one night, and offered Mishra the secrets behind the Zegon staff (cf card, Staff of Zegon) in exchange for her own freedom. Impressed by the artifice behind it, he instead offered Ashnod apprenticeship (Yes, people, Ashnod was a girl! A hot one at that, although she's very masochistic).

But this revealed a weakness for the raki. He was too reliant on his one Dragon Engine. So with his new apprentice, he ventured forth to the Caves of Koilos once more.

Phyrexia
In Koilos Mishra and Ashnod found an ambulator; a portal between the planes. All it needed were a few repairs. Upon entry, they went and saw what Mishra had once seen in his dreams; a mechanical parody in nature. And soon enough, they found more Dragon Engines. Although this time, they were larger and much more... ancient.

But it didn't matter. His Weakstone could handle them all. Soon, he had three new Dragon Engines under his forceful control.

Apparently someone else owned the Dragons. A Demon, a conglomeration of flesh and metal, came from the oily sky, descending upon them like an angel of judgement. Perhaps this, too, could be controlled by the Weakstone.

But all it did was piss it off. So, without other options, Mishra and Ashnod ran. They ran back to the portal leading to Koilos with the three Engines, and hurriedly attempted to close the gate. With anger, the demon's claw reached out for the portal...

And then it closed, severing the demonic Claw from the mechanical limb. They were safe. For the moment.

Now Gix knows that Dominaria is no longer protected by the powerstone floating in Koilos.

Whew! That was some writing!! (Okay, admittedly, I copy-pasted certain things. But I put in a lot of effort, too...) Up next:

I'm still waiting for someone to run a campaign on one of the popular planes and canon stories, and I'm hoping even more for BJ to run it. Wink [/url]
