The Lysean Republic
History:
A merchant republic born from the ashes of the ancient Lysean Empire, the Republic was a trading powerhouse with a pre-Incursion trading network that stretched from the Lysean Peninsula to Elenia, the Elven Dominions, Selentia, and the Al-Diraq Imperium. Known as canny traders, sharp politicians, bold-faced liars, and treacherous backstabbers, Lyseans have a mixed reputation across the Alliance nations, usually depending on who they last swindled. Though barely touched by physical damage during the Githyanki Incursion, Lysea did not escape unscathed. The disruption of its trading networks resulted in financial collapse, economic hardship, and social unrest. The two Consuls of the Republic are currently split on how to react to the post-Incursion world, with Consul Leonidas favoring an aggressive and expansionist foreign policy, while Consul Octavius and his followers favor a more isolationist approach, seeking to rebuild the damage done by the Gith war.
Military Strength:
Lysea has a relatively small army, but its forces are bolstered by military alliances with the Dark Elves of Doomwood and the Dwarves of House Broadhammer, who guard the Barrier Peaks bordering Arcania. The Republic has traditionally relied on its impressive naval forces to defend itself from any Selentine, Arcanian, or Elenian attacks.
Society:
Lysea prides itself as a center of wealth, trade, and culture. The Selentines are an empire of clerks, laborers, and grunts, the Arcanians, otherworldly magic users, and the Mandrakor little better than apes in armor. Only in Lysea will you truly find grace, beauty, and the refinements of a truly civilized culture, with perhaps a passing nod to the ancient and aesthetically inclined elves. Possessed of a rich cultural tradition, the merchant princes patronize numerous artists, sculptors, playwrights and writers extolling the glory of their house or the civilization of Lysea. The capital itself is constantly ablaze with parties, balls, masquerades, and other social events, all funded by the wealth of the merchant princes and trading conglomerates.
Beneath the cultured veneer lies a seething field of subtle conflicts as the nobles, traders, and companies vie for power, wealth, and influence. The representative structure of the Senate supposedly protects the people from the abuses of power, but in reality, the Senate is one of the prime abusers of power. Strangely enough, it manages to maintain a dynamic equilibrium, each faction, party, or house waiting to pounce on every perceived scandal, corruption, or abuse. The largest factions in the Post Incursion Senate are the Expansionists and the Isolationist. Famed for the cutthroat nature of their intrigues, few people really trust the Lyseans in anything. However, the deals they offer are very often well worth the risk. Just watch your back.
EDIT: Coming soon: House Broadhammer, the Doomwood, and House Liandri. _________________ Words are the only bullets in truth's bandolier. And poets are the snipers.
