Legend of the Five Rings, Alderac Entertainment Games' beloved samurai RPG and CCG franchise, will be releasing its 4th Edition later this year. The writers who worked on 4th Edition have begun to upload biweekly Designer Diaries discussing this edition. Link to the Diaries

Here's the schedule:

* January 8: The Anatomy of a New Edition
* January 20: The Philosophy of 4th Edition
* February 3: Correcting the Mistakes of the Past
* February 17: Timeline Neutrality and Finding the Clan Themes
* March 3: The "Feel" of Rokugan
* March 17: Designing Skills
* March 31: Designing Advantages & Disadvantages
* April 14: Designing Schools - Bushi
* April 28: Designing Schools - Courtier
* May 12: Designing Schools - Shugenja
* May 26: Designing Secondary Systems

I've been keeping updated on both the Diaries and the AEG forums, where the designers have been answering questions (or at least saying "we'll talk about that in an upcoming designer diary") to certain questions about 4th Edition.

The main difference I can see with this Edition, in terms of overall direction, is "timeline neutrality", which essentially means that for the first time ever, L5R the RPG won't have an official canon time setting, at least in the core rules. This does not mean that they'll throw out all the changes that L5R's interactive storyline have caused to the game, but instead they'll give in options for both GMs and Players to play games set in different times in the history of Rokugan (including fan favorite pre-Scorpion Clan Coup era, the setting of L5R RPG's 1st Edition). They'll instead be releasing the canon setting details in separate books or online supplements, possibly grouped together by era (in the same way that they released various books detailing characters, events, and and other things identified with each of L5R's eras for 3rd Edition).

I plan to buy 4th Edition, since I've been planning to run an L5R game for the longest time, and now this seems as good a reason as any. Your thoughts?
