I've been trying to look for some solid Swordmage builds but the folk at WotC's Character Op. boards are taking too long to make one. Anyone have any good builds for an Eladrin Swordmage I plan to take into Wandering Swordmage? In particular, I dunno what epic destiny to give the guy. >_>
On a similar note, is Wandering Swordmage a good paragon path for multiclassing? Like, with a class that uses WIS more than Swordmage does? |

Cool. My current character is an eladrin fighter that just MC'd into Swordmage. Still at level 4, though, so I only have the build planned up to level 10. And I'm actually going for Paragon MC, which is something CharOp people will hang me for. But what can I say? I like diversity.
Although wandering swordmage is very, very tempting for all those teleportation effects...
All in all, I can't yet justify a build for this using pure swordmage, who doesn't have wisdom as a primary stat at all.
Start as fighter, though, and Wis would be useful for OA powers and the Wandering Swordmage. MC into Swordmage (hey, Arcana skill is awesome) plus get Acolyte Power for Armathor's Step. Use Longsword plus Eladrin Soldier. Get a Mithrendain Steel Weapon and you'll be teleporting around like mad.
Finally, since this is already a multiclass build, Eternal Seeker would be cute. Stop fighter advancement at this point and focus on Swordmage powers (basically, you're getting ftr for the +1 attack with weapons).
That's me IMO. |

If only MC feats let you qualify for epic destinies. I was all set to drop my swordmage into Elven High Mage from Dragon's article on epic Faerun characters. -_- |

Yeah, I would've suggested it, too. But hey, if you're DM is flexible enough, it'll work.
As it is, if you plan to MC into Wizard, Eternal Seeker or Chosen are the best options (I'm assuming that you are in FR). |

I have a swordmage build in mind, but i'm not telling yet .
Wandering swordmage is a good choice, though there is the assault PP (i forgot the name) that focuses more on aegis of assault builds swordmage.
I really didn't like the Swordmage MC feat, where's my marking powers? |

+1 AC on Ereth (my fighter) for one encounter is fun. Blade Initiate may not help her mark, but it still keeps her from getting hit, thus I like it.
Besides, I have fighter marking already. |

Anarch of Shyr, I think. I'm pretty much decided on going Wandering Swordmage, if for nothing else but being able to do Vergil's summoned swords thing with the Heritage of Blades stance. |

cool idea. Also, wandering swordmage also works well with total aegis at epic
if you're going assault type, get escalating assault. It works |

So I've heard. In fact, I hear things get kinda silly once you get total aegis for a wandering swordmage...

Are attack bonuses that worth it even if this one caps at +3? I've heard tales of how hard it is to get attack bonuses in 4E but as of now I haven't played the game long enough to experience that yet. |

Actually, even at 3.5, a +1 bonus is a +1 bonus. It just that at higher levels, it seems insignificant, since 3.5 has other ways usually, like adding another ability modifier in something (like Int on damage rolls, Cha on attack rolls, etc.)
So far in 4ed, they don't seem to have that type of sources (so far), though they did say that they would be avoiding that, so a bonus is a bonus |

Having to boost Wis isn't really crippling for a Wandering Swordmage, IMHO, but this is speaking as someone whose first few characters were fighters and paladins. Use it as a tertiary stat, similar to how Wis works for those two classes as well.
You'd have to drop either Str or Con for your Swordmage, though. Depends again on which Swordmage path you'll be using - obviously, the Con SM will have to go and pick up the Intelligent Fighter feat so he can forget about Str completely. |

CON it is, then. I was planning to take the intelligent blademaster feat anyway. Fits better with my Crane...err, finesseful kinda swordmage. |

The years have taught me that my playstyle practically demands CON. |

Eladrin Swordmages bend towards the Shielding Swordmage; besides, the Assault Swordmage is not very defender-ish. For such a build, Coronal Guard and Wandering Swordmage are good paragon options.
You're taking Intelligent Blademaster, so Str becomes non-important. If you're going Wandering, Wis becomes secondary. Cha is really a dump stat here, and so is Dex (unless you're doing basic ranged attacks). Maybe Str 10, Dex 8, Con 10, Int 16, Wis 16, Cha 8 (prior to racial adjustments) if you're going Wandering? If you're playing in the Forgotten Realms, take the Impiltur background so you get the Wis bonus to starting hp (instead of Con).
Just some ideas right off the bat. |

Hmm. What races normally do go Assault Swordmage then? Genasi? |

Yep. Flavor-wise, I think Genasi and Dragonborn are natural Assault Swordmages. On the other hand, Eladrin and Githyanki are good Shielding Swordmages. |

I was wondering how eladrin make good shielding swordmage, stat-wise. They have the Int, but they don't have the Con bonus, which was the stat for aegis of shielding. |

Not really stats-wise. They're more flavor-wise. Read the entry for Coronal Guard. Plus, they have their own encounter teleport, which complements aegis of shielding more than it does the assault version. |

Keepin' true to the thread title, here's a pretty useful build that me and one of the blokes over here came up with:
Pitz wrote: |
Male Stormsoul-Genasi Swordmage (Shielding) 3
Ability Scores (post-racials): Str 13, Con 14, Dex 10, Int 20, Wis 10, Cha 8
Feats: Intelligent Blademaster, Armor Prof (hide)
Skills: Arcana, Athletics, Endurance, Insight
At-Will Atks: lightning lure, sword burst
Encounter Atks: flame cyclone, transposing lunge
Daily Atk: frost backlash
Utility: dimensional warp
Equipment of note: +1 broadsword, +1 hide armor
|
Pretty nifty character, really. Intelligent Blademaster makes your melee basic atk almost like an at-will power on its own! And while I first thought that the build could be even more defender-ish with a higher Con (lowering the Int), it turned out to be just fine. AC 23 at 3rd level? Wicked! Prevent 10 points of damage virtually every round? Divine! He sure made the rogue a little bolder about moving around the battlefield. |
