Kyris Lasirlan

Desc
Short and slender for a Baalim, Kyris Lasirlan nevertheless exudes an attitude of casual disdain for nearly everything around her that is broken only when she comes across some new strain of arcane or historical knowledge. Kyris tends to stand out among other Baalim, her unusually fair skin and slight build often making her appear almost human-like. That is, until one notices the smoldering red eyes, the slightest hint of claws, and of course, her tail. Her hair, colored somewhere between midnight blue and sable, is kept carefully trimmed short so as not to get in the way when working in an expeditionary dig or dungeon assault, while still leaving bangs that she can coyly sweep aside with a smile should she need recourse to feminine wiles.

While her attitude and poise reflect her highborn academic background, Kyris nevertheless makes clear that her new career is that of a field researcher and occasional adventurer. Nearly always clad in dark reds and dull browns, the warlock’s attire nevertheless tends to deviate from her brethren in their utilitarian functionality and general lack of ornamentation. Only close inspection of her gear will reveal her professional pride in keeping her equipment immaculately maintained and embellished only with the subtlest ornaments, rather than the ostentatious displays of her kin. Clad either in a sleeveless red shirt or polished leather armor, Kyris has learned to be always prepared for trouble, and her blades and arcane implements are always within easy reach, whether she’s in the middle of a dig or relaxing at a tavern.

Background:
Born among the remnants of the ancient Baalim empires, Kyris Lasirlan was steeped in the Redeemer tradition at an early age. The young warlock was raised up with tales of the power of the ancient Baalim during the Imperium, their loyalty to their gods, the trust that the divine placed among their kind, their heroic efforts during the Godfall war, and the tragic fall of their divine masters. She was trained to honor the ancient covenants between the Baalim and their patron, the Iron-Handed God. Still, these stories did not ring true in the heart of the inquisitive young warlock. Why should she swear loyalty to beings that were weak enough to be destroyed by mortals? Were the Baalim ever truly lords and masters of the ancient Imperium? To Kyris’ eyes, the mightiest Baalim lords were merely trustees, favored slaves who were given breadcrumbs that they might strut and bluster and keep the other mortals in line. The Iron-Handed promised wealth, glory, power, and dominion, but when it came to the crux point, the gods failed the Baalim. And the Baalim, ever the lapdogs to the divine, fell with them to their present, sorry state.

Neither do the tales of the Godstones impress Kyris. How can she be sure that these are truly the bones of the fallen gods? Might they not be merely crystallized magic, or some other strange substance? No, if Kyris Lasirlan would ever put her allegiance on the line, it would be to a power that deserved her attention, a power that would truly grant what it promised. Kyris Lasirlan believes that in following the Path of Stars, she might come into contact with such a power. What price it might exact from her is a matter that she tries not to imagine.

Ostracized among her kind, Kyris makes no secret of her distaste for the Liberator and Redeemer ideologies, and instead seeks power and knowledge. Perhaps, among the arcane and secrets that she finds, she might stumble across what she really seeks: A power that might allow her to set the fallen world to right.

Hmm. Looking closely at the warlock over the past few weeks has shown me a bunch of potential misplays in my design for a star-pact warlock. I should have been concentrating in one particular side of the star-pact's relevant ability powers. Rather than splitting it between Con/Cha sides of Star-pact, I should be going for either Con/Int or Cha/Int. May also tweak bits of her background fluff, etc.

@BJ: I'm still examining build options, but is it possible to still tweak this character as she hasn't participated in anything major yet?

Story Hook: The Quiet Lies the Locust Tells (With apologies to the great Harlan Ellison, but the title was too good to pass up as a story idea.)

Kyris was not always a fierce iconoclast defying Baalim tradition. The child of a prominent Baalim Redeemer clan, Kyris was an avid student of the ancient histories of the Imperium. That was until she met the tiefling she came to know as Locust. A dark-skinned courtier possessed of a sardonic smile and rakish wit, it was the Locust who first pointed out to "his little one" the "inconsistencies" in the official histories and records of the Baalim and the Imperium. Indignant at the slanders to the good name of the Imperium that Kyris once believed in, the young noble sought to prove him wrong by delving into the archives of House Lasirlan. The deeper that she delved however, the more things refused to add up. Simultaneously stunned and thrilled, Kyris would return to Locust to seek out the truth behind the lies.

Locust would become the young noble's researcher partner, lover, and mentor. Locust would be the one to tell her the tales of the ancient time before the gods, and of the primordial things that lurk in shadow, hellfire, and cold void. It was he that taught the young girl the path of the warlock and initiated her in the first steps of the Path of Stars. And it would be this moment that sundered Kyris from House Lasirlan and from the being she had come to know as the Locust.

In the throes of the initiation ritual and clasped tight in the arms of her mentor and lover, Kyris drank in her newfound power. Then she opened her eyes and saw Locust, and at the same time, something within him: a thing of chitin and bone, an alien intelligence that looked upon her through the sardonic eyes of her dusky-skinned paramour and through glassy insect-eyes as numberless as the stars.

Beyond that moment, Kyris memories of her banishment are hazy, clouded by magical and physical trauma. The pair were discovered, and Kyris barely escaped with her life. Cast out of House Lasirlan, Kyris now seeks answers. What is the true story behind the the ancient primordial things before the time of gods? Of the fall of the Iron-Handed God? Of the shadowed things in the cold void? Most of all, she seeks to find out who and what her erstwhile mentor really is. Who or what is the Locust, and why did he/it give so much attention to her? Why did Locust lie to her about its nature, and what are its true intentions?

Hook: Quiet Lies
-Kyris seeks to investigate ancient arcane and historical lore, which has led to her career as an archaeologist, researcher, and adventurer. In particular, she seeks out lore on the Primordials, the Godfall War (especially the roles of the Baalim and the Iron-Handed God in the conflict) and on the Far Realm and the things that exist within it.

Hook: The Locust
-Kyris is on the watch for information on any information concerning a tiefling that matches the description of Locust. She doesn't hold out much hope of finding information in the near future, as she knows that magic can easily conceal forms. She is also researching on the unnamed thing that is or is within Locust: its purpose, its powers, and its current fate.

Hook: Killing in the Name of...

Even though she has been banished from House Lasirlan, Kyris nevertheless continues to use the name of Lasirlan, almost as if she were actually provoking her family to do something about it. And perhaps they already have. The warlock has been attacked at least twice, by what she first believed to be random thugs, which she now suspects were agents of House Lasirlan. She now tries to keep a wary eye out, but she nevertheless continues to use keep the name of Lasirlan.

Of course, she has no idea what the enemies of House Lasirlan have to say about this state of affairs...
