Hiya, guys! I'm getting the gist of this DotA game. Just played this afternoon, and got myself pawned A LOT! It was 1v1 though, so no ill will towards me. Smile

Any tips you guys can give me? I'm leaning towards Intelligence-based 'nuke spammers' (did I get it right? I just heard one of the guys say that). I dunno, maybe I just like flashy spells.

Also, I really need help with the right items. I spend half of the time looking around the god-forsaken stores and figuring out how to get to which item!

Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I am still a noob. ^__^ I really like zeus as a spammer. May not be the best spammer of all but he is fun, like playing a warmage.

the golden rule in DotA is this: when you're about to die, RUN. getting killed three times in a row is a sure way to get your team to lose, so better to run away than get killed. now if you have healing items, you can hang around a bit, and that's okay. keep in mind that you still gain XP if creeps get killed while you're in the area (generally hanging out behind your ranged creep should be okay).

of course, in DotA, the hero you use is not as important as the items you build. it is true however that for every hero in DotA there are several counter-heroes available (e.g. Bradwarden, a very tough hero, is easily pwned by Bone Clinkz, but Bone Clinkz is easily pwned by Doombringer, etc.). but keep in mind that this is doubly true for items. theoretically, any one hero can defeat any other hero in DotA if both players are evenly skilled, given the correct item build.

for starters, however, here are some items you should consider:

Early Game Items:
-Ring of Regeneration (RoR): adds +2 hp regen/sec., which is pretty useful early on
-Ancient Tango of Essifation: at a mere 80 bucks you get two charges healing 175 hp each, which is again pretty important early on
-Boots of Speed: you'll have to buy this eventually, but there are certainly worse openings than Boots of Speed as a first item. the additional 50 to move speed is useful for running away.
-Ring of Basilius: useful for improving mana regen, plus there's a bit of an armor boost there as well. must-have for early game spammers.
-Bracer/Wraith Band/Null Talisman: these items add +3 to all stats and an additional +3 to str/agi/int, respectively. quite useful early on, and fairly cheap to make (roughly 500 gold each).
-Perseverance: improves hp regen, mana regen, and adds a bit of damage in the mix, too. overall an excellent item, and can later be turned into some other, more useful item.

Mid Game Items:
-Mekanism: a must-have for int types without healing (which is about 90% of int type characters). a great support item as well, as it provides an activatable heal ability at a fairly good area of effect (AoE).
-Vanguard: a great item overall. combines the effects of ring of health, stout shield, and vitality booster. crucial for any hero that has low hp and armor, particularly int types like Leshrac or Krobelus.
-Lothar's Edge: another useful item for weak heroes. grants bonuses to agi, damage, and activatable wind walk, which turns your character invisible so you can run away (hopefully) undetected.
-Power Treads: replaces your boots. increases movement speed and attack speed, and as such is a good item for pretty much any hero.
-Linken's Sphere: a very important item. linken's adds the perseverance regen abilities with bonuses to all your stats, plus grants the wielder a shield of sorts, automatically countering most targeted spells every minute.
-Sange & Yasha: very good item for melee types without orb effects. the bonuses to attack and move speed are highly beneficial, then couple that with damage and some stat bonuses and you've got a really solid item.
-Dagon: gives minor bonuses to stats, adds some damage to your attacks, and lets you use an activatable energy burst that deals 400 damage (initially). the Dagon is one of two items that can be upgraded, so later on that 400 damage energy burst can go as high as 800, which for some heroes is really all you need to secure the kill.
-Eul's Divinity Scepter: adds an int boost and mana regen, plus lets you use cyclone up to 6 times, which is excellent for stopping your opponent while you try to run away, or for setting up the kill.
-Cranium Basher: gives some damage and a small boost to strength, but adds a percentage to stun somebody during your regular attack. useful for melee characters with high attack speeds.

End Game Items:
-Guinsoo's Scythe of Vyse: an upgrade of the eul's. the cyclone is replaced with a polymorph spell, turning whoever you hit into a sheep for a few seconds. plenty of time to start beating people senseless. also adds more int, plus some damage and attack speed. very useful for spammers as well, as Guinsoo's gives +150% mana regen.
-Monkey King Bar: gives +75 damage and a minor attack speed boost. useful and a bit cheaper than buriza, but ultimately not as useful (still a good item though).
-Eye of Skadi: one of the most useful items in the game, and very expensive. grants +25 to all stats and an orb effect frost attack. the frost attack is particularly useful for heroes with ranged attacks.
-Buriza do Kyanon: grants +75 damage and a chance to hit for 2.2x normal damage. great item for characters with high attack speeds, who can maximize the chances of scoring a critical hit.
-Butterfly: grants damage, agility, and evasion. mostly for agi types only, but most agi types will be building up to this, so keep that in mind.
-Heart of Tarrasque: gives a big bonus to strength and hp, and also adds 11 hp/sec. regen. useful for weak heroes looking for a late game epic toughness boost, as well as for str heroes in general.
-Aghanim's Scepter: gives large bonuses to hp, mp, and int, and is a must-have item for a very limited number of characters (in fact, if you read the item description, it contains a list of the characters who will benefit most from it). keep this item in mind when using guys like zeus, lich, lina, ogre magi, etc.
-Radiance: +70 damage, damages all enemies in an area for 35 hp/sec. useful for characters who can walk around the map quickly and while invisible, like Clinkz or Rikimaru, or for characters who have AoE damage/sec. skills like Alchemist or Razor.
-Aegis of the Immortal: gives bonuses to armor and spell resistance, plus has three charges that instantly resurrect you at the fountain of health when you die. take note however that the Aegis cannot be dropped, therefore you must only build it when you're sure you won't be dying three times any time soon. makes for a great late game combo with...
-Divine Rapier: +250 damage. 'nuff said. wicked expensive though, and if you die, you will drop it. that's why it's used with the Aegis, so you have three charges' worth of mayhem to cause with it.

so, yeah... those are the more commonly used items, anyway. others are just a bit limited in their usage, or not as popular. quite a bit to go with there, but that's not even all of the items yet. for more info on items, try visiting here. alternatively, if there's a particular hero you need help with, just name him/her and we'll do our best to hook you up with a workable item/skill build.

hmm i guess i have something to spill out though...

i had been on countless 1v1 games since v5.xx and i admit i do suck. back then when i was in second year, i did played DotA with the rest of the guys at Sonic (the PC shop at the 3rd floor of TBA...The Bahay ng Alumni). i keep on losing until i found out how they win. based on my experience, it's not just the hero that does the dirty work, it's the creeps. i tried a different approach in playing DotA and suddenly, i felt i am gaining the sense of playing it. PUSH!. it's because the main objective of the game is to destroy the World Tree or the Frozen Throne.

some instances:

1) i am playing Ezalor and my enemy's Lich...i got pawned twice in a row with painful Chain Frosts + Dagon...but in the end i still won by smashing his Frozen Throne into pieces. Kills-Deaths 1-2

2) i had randomed Furion whilst my enemy luckily picked Magina. It's an obvious disadvantage for me but still i kept playing. Since he was an agi-type player, he did his best to kill me. too bad i gained advantage because of extra creeps Furion had produced. the massive push along with Mekansm blowned the 2 mid towers into smithereens. soon enough, i had Linken's Sphere on hand and the rest is history. K-D: 1-5

3) i randomed Razor while the other player picked Sven. i took all-offensive middle push and when Razor turned Lvl 6, lightning shocked every nearby enemy. not long enough, i got myself a Radiance (i had tried my best denying creeps) and thought it's over for me once he gets Lvl 16+. The Radiance + Lightning Spam synergized and soon after, knocked down The World Tree, putting an early finish to the game. K-D: 2-2 (it should be 0-2 without the help of Radiance)

Got to play some more team games. I adopted some of the D&D caster tactics - mainly, hang back and support until you've got enough cheese of your own.

I must say it rarely works for DotA...

I randomed the Prophet Furion last time, and I just learned then that he's not one to wait for late game. But heck, I played a decent game this time. How is Sprout-and-flee as a harassing tactic? Laughing With some tips from the bystanders, I even got to smash all the enemy towers along my lane!

Another time, I was learning the Slayer combo: Light Strike Array + Dragon Slave + Laguna Blade. At 23rd level, I pawned three with this combo, albeit at separate instances. It's kinda hard predicting for the LSA, though. It has a crappy casting time!

So now, I'm kinda getting the drift on Lina Inverse and Furion. Any help for item combos, and for which stage of the game?

dude, all three of those heroes are pushers. it's not surprising that you pushed for the win. you shoulda gone for the hero killer builds! hehehe...

@Pitz-Ikko: Sprout-and-flee is useful if you need to, well, if you need to flee. Otherwise I wouldn't waste the mana. With Furion you wanna whittle your opponent's hp down bit by bit, then when you think you can kill him sprout and keep on attacking him. I've seen people use Power Treads and Stygian Desolator on Furion, but I don't know much else. I would ask Guizzelle about that; she's kind of the resident Furion expert.

As far as Lina is concerned... well I'm not much of a Lina expert, but I'll try. First, you prolly want to build a Mekanism, as most Int types are wont to do. Then buy some Boots of Speed, which you later turn into Power Treads. Next, you could go with Guinsoo's Scythe of Vyse. It increases your attack speed and gives you access to hex, which should slow your opponent just in time to eat a Laguna Blade. Lastly you'll want to get Aghanim's Scepter, which increases your Laguna Blade damage and gives you lots of extra hp/mp. If the game lasts much longer than that, build an Aegis of the Immortal followed by a Divine Rapier.

Alternatively, you could swap out the Meka for a Dagon. You'll have less regen and no heal, but you'll definitely be a killer. LSA + DS + Laguna Blade + Dagon should kill just about anybody at Level 6.

in DotA there is only one goal: to destroy the other team's ancient (the World Tree 4 Sentinels, the Frozen Throne for the Scourge).. so pushers are actually the strongest in the game (no kidding)..

BUT since Warcraft:TFT is battle-oriented, it would be very boring if the game was just about pushing.. so another way to win is KILLING the pusher heroes in the game.. that is where the HERO-KILLING heroes come in...

i cant actually say whcih heroes are goooood and which stink... it is actually based on three things:
1. your allies' heroes(including yours);
2. your enemies' ; and
3. YOU, the player..

like playing Magic:TG, any game has a META.. but for W:TFT, the meta changes depending on what heores you got, what your allies got, what your enemies got, and how each of you play...

if your heroes have synergies (such as Vengeful-Sven or Vengeful-Bradwarden tag team),it would play A LOT BETTER than playing solo...

you also have to know your enemies' heroes weakness and also yours. you can purchase items that can negate or disrupt your enemies skills or 'hide' your weakness from them (such as being too thin).. even some heroes are basically a threat against others (such as Axe over Abaddon)..

the key is practice, like any other sports or games you play..
