Ultimorcium Fagnefus, or Ultra-Fagnus, was a street urchin adopted by the legendary Sir Uberto Fagnefus, highly renowned as the 18th best wizard of all-time... that is, the 18th best wizard of the small village of Barrier Twig, which has produced precisely 26 wizards. Ultimorcium spent his youth primarily as an apprentice for Sir Uberto. His diligence was unrivaled. His capacity to learn... not so much. While his mentor tried hard to teach the young boy the intricacies of spellcraft, Ultimorcium was simply quite slow on the pick up.

And so for 44 years the boy worked as an apprentice for Sir Uberto, until such time as the beloved Sir Uberto lay on his deathbed. With the great wizard's last words he named a successor... one Hypperita Fagnefus, who turned out to be Sir Uberto's illegitimate love-child with his third cousin's stepsister.

Thus Ultimorcium found that he must serve again, only this time it was different. It seemed his years with Sir Uberto Fagnefus taught him some things after all: how to brew potions exactly right, how to scribe scrolls with elegant penmanship, how to polish orbs to produce a twinkling, lustrous sheen. He knew things Hypperita never even heard of before, probably due to her training in the big city. Apparently, Ultimorcium did make for a fine wizard after all; he was just not quite as good by Sir Uberto's standards. The town of Barrier Twig made rather excellent wizards after all; whoever would have guessed?

But, in a very un-wizardly manner, Hypperita did not attempt to usurp the knowledge Ultimorcium possessed. Rather, she trained Ultimorcium formally, such that he may move on from Sir Uberto's spiral tower and adventure on his own. In three months' time Hypperita had taught him everything she knew, and thus Ultimorcium, at 52 years of age, wandered off into the land in search of adventure.

"Well... as they say, better late than never, eh?!" said Ultimorcium with a shake of his walking stick. And so the old young wizard took the first few steps in the journey towards greatness.
