Hey guys!
I was thinking of a fun and easy way to lose weight, and this reminded me of my judo days. Then I started thinking, "Hey, judo grappling wasn't that hard to learn, and you exert a lot of effort. You also neither inflict nor receive all that much pain. This is perfect!"
So, if you guys are interested, I'll probably set-up something at my place. I just need to buy some mats and stuff, then we can get started.
If you like the idea of getting fit, or the idea of touching other men without any sexual connotations (I'm looking at you Myke), just let me know.

Finally! Some judo action! I liked my judo class but never found a venue to practice it. (Except for a MMA-club I tried out for... long story short - I ached all over  )
But this is about the throws and the grapples, NOT the rolling, right?

Actually, we won't be doing any throws for several reasons:
1) Tatami mats used in judo are kinda expensive. I was thinking cheapass puzzle mats two layers thick. That won't nearly be enough to cushion our fall.
2) Although the prospect of chucking oghma or erwin across the room seems fun, stand-up judo gives too much advantage to the heavier fighter. I want to see this as cutting across weight classes, and grappling a 230-pounder and a 150-pounder may seem different, but the principles are the same.
3) Since none of us are actual belt-holders (I could be wrong, please correct me) in judo, aikido, or BJJ, no one can teach us how to execute throws SAFELY. Remember that we are doing this for fun, so safety first.
I kinda want this done maybe every Saturday. I'm willing to plunk down 1k for a 10x10x1 mat, but it would be best if we had a 10x10x2, so we need another 1k. I'm willing to host it and keep our stuff at my house, but I want people to commit to this if we're doing it. Once we start, we should really see it through. We will study pins and submissions mostly, but we will have conditioning (push-ups, crunches) as well. I'd really, really, REALLY like to try this before June. Let me know if there are other questions. I am online weekdays 5AM-2PM, but without messenger (effing company policies). Attire will be white shirt and jogging pants.

There's summer exams during Saturday, but I'd like to join. We could probably use org funds for the mats if we will really go through with this.
Also, anyone have an extra belt for a gi? Someone stole mine right after our tournament. |

Saturday mornings would be ideal. We can start on the 31st if people are fine with that. You can wear a gi, but be warned that a gi can make it easier for people to apply a gi choke on you. So if you want to commit to this, I'll be needing names and numbers. Sorry guys, I'm not familiar with all your forum id's.
Proposed rules (thus flexible):
1) Grapplers will start sitting with their backs against each other. At the start of the match they will both turn to their right.
2) There will be just one untimed round. Rounds will end when there is a victor.
3) Victory can be achieved through submissions, pins, or DQ of an opponent. A pin is defined as a grappler positioning his torso over his opponent's supine torso with both the opponent's shoulders flat on the mat for 20 seconds.
4) A match may be interrupted by the ref if one or both of the grapplers are considered off the mat. Off the mat is defined as a grappler's torso no longer on the playing mat, or a grappler who is in a prone position with feet on the mat but both knees not touching the mat. This kind of off the mat warrants a warning. Three warnings warrant a DQ.
5) Small-joint (anything smaller than a wrist) manipulation, biting, pinching, or attacks of a liquid or sexual nature warrant two warnings or higher, depending on the ref. Refusing to let go of a submission hold after an opponent has tapped thrice and after a referee has given notice to the grappler warrants a very severe beating of the grappler involved, one that would involve a hot metal rod where the sun don't shine.
6) After a referee stoppage, both grapplers restart the match in the same starting position.

Some of my shirts were ruined during judo class so I'd rather give an enemy a location to grab at with my gi than having them stretch my shirt. I like my shirt without bacons  |

The thought of oghma and boy_bakal grappling each other is worth contemplating. |
I received one grappling lesson from dum once and I think I tapped out in a matter of seconds. It's not that I can't take the pain. It was dum's weight crushing my lungs.

Before it gets any gayer, here is an update.
I decided to change the mat to 12x12. This change is quite important since this will make the playing area bigger and therefore more freedom of movement. I've also decided to purchase a 12x12 tarpaulin mat for smoother movement. We will still have a 12x12 rubber mat under the tarp, for cushioning purposes. With that being said, the tarpaulin will cost about P3,600. If you know of a place that can offer it at a much lower price, pls inform me. I will have it made in a printing shop. I am also asking anyone if they have a design in mind for the tarp. If the design is one applicable to UPHGC purposes, then I am willing to lend it for events or other things. It would take me until the end of the month to pool my resources together, so that a may 31 start is definitely REALISTIC. my only concern now is the rubber mat. If 12 other people are joining, then maybe you guys can raise the money for that. Adding the mat to my expenses with the tarp will just be too much. Or if HGC can help me shoulder the cost of the tarp, seeing as how HGC can also use it, then all the better.
Anyway, those with the power to decide the allocation of org funds can contact me if you deem this project worthy. I'd like to see sample prints for the tarp. 12 feet by 12 feet.

we're go on the 31st. i'd just like to ask you guys to chip in 100 each (one time, i promise) to help me pay for our mats. i found a tarp that would suit our needs, but i would eventually get the 12x12 tarp, just not right away. what i have right now is 8x12, which should be mostly sufficient.
