How do I get in on this? I still follow magic, but can't find the time (or money) to sustain this hobby as much as i do DnD. Sad Maybe this will help me "get back", so to speak.

I've heard you can convert your virtual cards to physical cards somehow (though this imples that it's still something you dish out cash on, MtG online).

MtG Online has monthly fees I think. They should have a site somewhere on the wizards homepage and/or boards. I believe some rooms are free to play, but they're really sucky.

You can turn virtual cards into physical cards by completing a set online (i.e. getting one of each card). Then you can trade that in, and you lose the cards online, but you get 'em in real life.

I played this once, but as GUEST. Guests can choose precon decks of 5 colors and play with other guest in guestroom (lol guest).

But if you register then (i think) you are given some sort of fat pack to help you start with your deck. As usual you pay to get the other cards. Still not sure though, why not ask Roohbee herself?

haha, I haven't been here in months and when I googled my name "Roohbee", I found this thread. I think BJ and I talked about this already, but for those who want know, here's some details about MTGO.

MTGO doesn't charge a monthly fee. They charge a one-time registration fee of $10 which you can even use to purchase packs or event tickets(the MTGO currency).

The catch though is you would have to buy the packs and/or cards that you need just like in real life. For example, if you want to draft Alara, you have to buy 3 ALARA boosters for $3.99 each and 2 Event Tickets worth $1 each from the store. (You can save up to 30% though if you buy these from other players). If you want to construct a deck, you would have to buy/trade for the cards that you need. Thus, if you wanna play competitive magic in mtgo, it would cost you a lot. If you just wanna casual, it's not that expensive.

The good things about it:
1. Cards are generally cheaper here. Commons are like 160-320 per ticket.
2. It's easy to buy and sell stuff here. In a matter of minutes you can cash out by selling your collection to other players.
3. There are formats that are possible only in MTGO. For example, In Momir Basic format, you have a deck full of basic lands and a special avatar card. The avatar's ability is " X, Discard a card: Put a token into play as a copy of a random creature with converted mana cost X." It's fun and cheap to play.

Sorry for the late reply. I don't frequent this part of the boards too much.

So, them's the perks of MtGO? Can you tell me anything about its disadvantages to the actual, physical cards?

Also, WotC (the DnD part, at least) is not as reliable software-wise as other gaming companies are. Most of this is attributed to the company having their software development as a secondary to their physical games.

So my question is this: Is there a particular concern for how MtgO runs? Or is it a very reliable software?

That's easy, a newly opened virtual booster doesn't have that addicting smell! Laughing

A couple of disadvantages that I can think of:
1. When you're new to MTGO, you're prone to misclicks and wrong stop settings that could cause you the game. For example, if you wanna activate something during your upkeep, you have to check if your turn is set to stop at your upkeep, if it isn't, you would miss your chance to do it. Misclicks pretty much explains itself.
2. There are a few cards that have bugs in certain situations. Last month, there was this bug with skeletonize. When you try to activate it, it causes the game to crash. This was already fixed though.

As to the software, they just completely changed the client a few months ago.
PROS
1. The server lag has been eliminated
2. It allows a lot of improvement that aren't possible with the previous version.

CONS
1. The UI is ugly and unintuitive. =P Though WoTC announced that the UI would have a complete overhaul early 2009.
2. Game-related bugs. E.g.There are several reported instances wherein the players weren't allowed to join the game after sideboarding.
3. Non-game related bugs. Clan chat not working, some rooms cannot be closed, stuff like that.
3. Play mat is a bit too crowded.
4. It's a resource hog. Min specs is P4, 1Gb RAM if you want to run 1 maybe 2 instances of MTGO and you can't play with a dial up connection.

To sum it all, the software could use a lot of improvement, but it's not enough reason to keep you from enjoying the game. And they're working on improving it. (at a snail's pace though).. Wink

Interesting. Playing MtGO sounds very appealing to me. And as long as I can have these cards go back to dead tree form when I want, I think I won't feel like I'm wasting my cash.

Can you improve your DCI ranking online?

Unfortunately, no. You'll have a separate online rating.

A one-time payment of 10 bucks, you say? That's... interesting. I could afford 10 dollars. Hell, I have 10 dollars (thanks Rev Laughing).

Might soon join MtGO myself, then XD

Well, if boy_bakal is joining, I just might, as well. But let me get a feel for my salary first, so I can see if any becomes expendable.

So, I signed up.

Well, actually, I'd like to ask how one makes money on MtGO... or rather, earns tickets. I mean, outside of actually spending, y'know, money.

I s'pose I'll plop down bit more cash for tickets sometime in the near future, just so I can get enough to construct a decent budget deck.

You'd do well to IM roohbee, as she doesn't frequent the boards often. So how's the interface, from your PoV?

Well, I've only been trading. Bit confusing at the outset honestly, but not too hard to get used to.

Haven't actually tried a game yet, since I'm currently without deck, such as it is. Hoping to remedy that soon, though Very Happy

I remember there being a trial server where you just play 10E decks against others. If you're trying to learn the interface, that's the best place to do it.

About that, I think they removed it in the new version, actually.

Well, in my case, I really studied the market: I was on for like 10-14 hours a day everyday the first month I joined. Laughing I would scour every bot for cheap cards and would end up earning like 5-10 cents per trade. I'd be lucky to earn 5 tickets a day. And once I have enough to enter a draft, I would and the whole process starts again... Laughing

But when I was able to memorize the price and to know which bots have good prices, it became easier. I would just buy cards from auction room, try to sell them in Classifieds or to bots. I'd also post buy ads in classifieds and sell the cards that I bought at a higher price. Wink

It's really that simple but you have to be patient.

That's... more trouble than I'd really like to go through :/

Well, let's say, for example, I plop down around 40 dollars for MtGO. What d'you recommend I do with the cash? Should I turn them all into tix, buy then sell some boosters, or buy and open some good boosters?

What I would recommend is you buy tickets not from the store but from other players. And then, familiarize yourself with the price of standard cards and boosters. Put buy ads in Classifieds. Then sell the stuff you bought either to bots or post them in Classifieds also.

edit:
Oh by the way, I do sell tix if you happen to need some. Also be careful in transacting outside MTGO Client(i.e. paypal, poker, moneybookers, etc) There are a lot of regular scammers in mtgo.. Razz
