The Escapist interviews Andy Collins (designer and developer for both 3.5 and 4.0) and Liz Scuh (WotC Brand director for D&D).
Among the topics they discuss are:
Why was 4.0 necessary?
What are your thoughts on Pathfinder/old-schoold D&Ders?
What were the inspirations for 4.0 (rather surprising answers here)
OGL vs GSL (beej, you'll probably have a very detailed opinion on this)
And a lot more. Still reading through it. Tell me what you think _________________ Currently Running: NOTHING

Interesting read. Confirms a few things that I've always been thinking. And on the DMing end, I can't help but agree with them wholeheartedly. The DMG is a real nice piece of work. It's never been easier to DM, imho.
And I like their points on 4e vs Pathfinder. They're two different games, springing from the same roots but in the end going in radically different directions with different people attracted to them. Gives you the best of both worlds, imo. If you want the classic school, go for Pathfinder. If you like the new school, go for 4e. It's not so much that one is better than the other so much as each excels at different things. I just happen to be a 4e fan more right now. _________________ Words are the only bullets in truth's bandolier. And poets are the snipers.

But Revan, you can only like one or the other! And if you run into a fan of the opposite system, you are supposed to engage in a sword fight! Only one fan may walk out alive! _________________ Currently Running: NOTHING

There will be pathfinder-4e wars online for the foreseeable future, yes. But from what I see, PF players and 4E players tend to get along well enough. If I will ever try out 3.x again, in fact, I'd go with PF for these reasons:
*Favored classes provide bonuses for choosing them rather than penalties for not choosing them.
*More hp at level 1.
*Vancian spellcasting with the spells scrutinized closely (no mega-polymorph rules, xp costs gone, etc)
*Class features all the way to level 20. Not taking a Prestige class actually makes sense.
If someone GM's Pathfinder, I'd go ahead and have a shot at it. _________________ Nosfecatu Publishing |
