A Mage: The Awakening Game featuring the return of

The Council of Seven

Synopsis:

Two years pass since we've last intruded upon the lives of the Council of 7. For the most part, both the Junior and Senior Council of 7 have graduated and moved on to other things. But what happens to the Council once thrust outside the safety of their frathouse?

For the most part, each of the council batches form their own distinct cabals once outside the walls of the university. Otherwise you'd have a vastly uncontrollable cabal that swells by seven every year. Nevertheless, these individual cabals recognize their roots, and the cabal are generally on friendly terms with each other. In addition, consecutive junior and senior councils often grow on each other, so itis not unusual for one such cabal to hail from different batches.

The council has graduated (well, most of them). They are now a recognized cabal. And the Interfector of the Guardians of the Veil, once more-than-infrequent bullies of the council, approaches them and asks for a favor in the name of the concilium.

Confirmed Players:
*the-bumper-car
*Aur Ain Soph
*boy_bakal
*Revan

(I'm still accepting more players as of this time)

Schedule: Once a month, generally on a Saturday. As the sembreak is upon us, however, we may have more than one game for October, starting with the 20th.

Time and location: 4pm-8pm, at boy_bakal's condo, by default.

Frequency: I have at least 4 chapters planned out for this story. If we can get something consistent, we can progress beyond this story.

Tech:
*New Characters are allowed. You are requiredto to have been/currently a member of the Epsilon Alpha Fraternity. Starting xp=character's age (max 27)
*On missing characters: I will allow you to re-make your missing character, should you wish to. If there is an estsablished backstory on your former Council of 7 member, you can make it again (Path/Order should be the same) with a starting xp of 50. I know you had more xp than that, but you lost the sheet. *shrugs*
*Declare the characters you're using in this thread:

Code:
[b]Character Name [/b]
Path/Order/Legacy (if any)
Gnosis: #
"xp used"/"total xp gained" ("arcane xp used"/"total arcane xp gained)

*On unspent xp: I suggest against using them immediately. Try to get a feel for Mage again before you plan to invest. But it's just about time for most of the current characters to think Legacies (aka Prestige Classes), so it might be worth looking into.

Some Magi of Note (WiP) wrote:

Disclaimer: While some of the companies, people and places here have been based on real-life counterparts, none of these names refer to the actual person. These files are used for non-profit, and is not made to attack such identities in any way.

Beast:

The enigmatic Beast has not been heard of ever since he's been called upon to help sort things out in the Math Bldg incident. He reported that since then, sorcerers of a different sort have taken over. Their magic does not invoke paradox, and they claim to have come from Arcadia, abode of the Fae. For the most part, the Consilium decreed to let these creatures be. They have not acted against Magi so far.

Before once again vanishing, however, Beast (whose Path and order have not been identified) gave one way of contacting him - and only Devilgrass knows how.

Dimples:

Upon graduating from the university, the unica hija of Don Arevalo tried out modeling on a whim... And dominated the industry. Those who seek beauty apparently go gaga whenever Dimples almost smiles, when her namesake facial traits are almost revealed.

She has since transcended to an acting career, where she is ivariably drafted into kontrabida roles in soaps. She has been the primary antagonist in the remake of the Spanish soap Marinar, and is currently seen as Narvang Itim in a famous superhero telenovela. The cult of celebrity cloaks her, and mages both allied and otherwise are having a hard time reaching her magically.

It is rumored that she and her onetime student Samael are occasional bedwarmers. Whether it's true or not, neither of the two care to divulge. In any case, those who follow showbiz happenings closely know that Dimples is currently dating Marc Abaya, former MTV VJ and vocalist of the band KJWAN.

Moth:

She was once known by her friends as Raven, and was a dedicated party girl. All that changed when she became the puppet of one Janet Mercado, a Seer. She was eventually freed by the Council of Seven, but she's never been the same since.

Today, the Thyrsus mage is a senior member of the council. Taking on the shadow name Moth, she guides the other student-magi as a doting mother - indeed, she has a 1-year old child with Rivercoins (her current relationship with the older mage is unclear at this point. No longer a party girl, she brings woe to anyone who seeks to harm her sisters in the Alpha Epsilon. She occasionally cares about the men of Epsilon Alpha, too.

Samael, Venom of God

Mastigos, Adamantine Arrow, Clavicularius (Legacies: The Sublime)
Gnosis: 3
XP Used: 77 XP Gained 87
Arcane XP Used: 7 Arcane XP Gained: 17

EDITS: Fixed source on Clavicularius legacy, and also made an error with the XP, it's 87, not 84. I really should clean up my handwriting.

Writing up what I've spent my XP on in a while.

Hmm...I still have to reverse engineer how much xp I've actually gained and used with Sevens. She's been in one other game so it's a bit different. And, yes, she's college age now if you add one year later. >.>;;

Has anybody figured out what their characters have been doing since?

I'm trying to figure out if Samael is taking up law, or if he's teaching obscure subjects like Medieval Philosophy and Demonology in CSSP. :p

I figure I'm spending all those yummy XP on:
-1 dot in Spirit Arcana (Yey Legacy Attainments!)
-1 dot Enhanced Item (1 point enhanced Sabre, a "gift" from the Bastion to Samael for services rendered? Not sure about this one)
-1 dot in some random merit (Maybe Allies/Contacts among local Magi? or Status, UPD teacher?)

Wonder how much :consored: will have to go down for Samael to earn the 4 dots in Spirit that he needs to manifest Goetic Demons. His Wisdom score is going to hell real quick, I imagine, but the possibilities are awesome.

Medieval philosophy isn't that obscure. >_> It's mostly Christian philosophers going on and on about god and society. But now I'm starting to wonder what department might hold a class on the history of demonology. Maybe the History department...

Sevens is easy. Aside from her part time work in Dimax and Sons, she's now a college student (and no longer jailbait. Sorry Oghma.) and a junior member of the Council of Seven (Sevens of the Council of Seven. Ye gods what a tongue twister!) Although I'm not sure what her major is just now. Considering her Adamantine Arrow bodyguard backstory, I remember dumping a lot of exp on new fighting and athletic capabilities with some exp to spare, which I figure I won't spend till I get the hang of mage again.

As for Sonnet? For story purposes, she's now a terror prof. and writer who occasionally goes out of her way to pick fights with advocates of speculative fiction (not sci-fi and fantasy, mind. Just speculative fiction). Razz

Machete's, like, in prison or something. Making a new one for this.

Name's Mac, and he's a detective/gambler (kinda weird, but there you go).

Acanthus, Mysterium, no legacy yet
Gnosis 1
XP Used: 24 XP Remaining: 3 (new character at max allowable age)
Arcane XP Used/Gained: -

I'll get into the details later. It shouldn't take too long to set us up the story or anything.

@boy_bakal: Cool, an Acanthus. It's always nice to be a little lucky. Wink

@the-bumper-car: I posted up the details for Moth, an NPC, above. As for your missing character problem, you can remake River Coins with 50xp. I printed out fresh, new sheets. Very Happy

@everyone: The mood of the game will be a bit darker than our last few mage games. So bear with me if there are less comedic moments (there will be some, of course).

@Revan: Why not both? XD Lots of people teach while taking up Law (I think... >.>)

Oh, and you'll have to figure out your sanctum, guys. Graduates hanging out at the frat house of EA would be weird. Who among the current characters have invested in Sanctum/Hallow dots?

Last time, River Coins managed to get that girl pregnant, right? I'm guessing even though he probably doesn't think much of it, his parents probably interfered, and may have forced him to marry her.

@BJ: Haha. I'll see by tomorrow.

Samael has one dot in Sanctum Size, Security, and Hallow, so I'm thinking he's got his own place somewhere. And he'll be busy boosting his personal Sanctum with his own Space warding spells.

Basic defense: When arriving home, Samael creates a Space Ward spell boosted with Atlantean Runes (p119) and cast with High Speech (p117). Gnosis+Space+High Speech gives Samael a 7 die pool. He sets the duration of the spell for two hours (-2), giving him a pool of 5. Assuming at least one success, the Atlantean Runes increase the duration by one category, making it 12 hours in duration, with Potence equal to the number of successes. Repeat in the morning, to perpetually maintain the wards. It's not perfect, but it'll keep the casual Scrying down.

Personal defenses planned:
-Combined cast Mental Shield and Misdirection, still debating whether it's advanced prolongation or spending mana to make it a 24 hour duration.
-Planning to make a variant of the Incognito Presence spell that makes Samael's sword unnoticed and unremarkable, and well-nigh invisible. People just don't notice it, and even if they do, they think nothing of it and forget it was ever there. It should have a conditional modifier (Fate 2) that nulls the spell once the sword is actually drawn, which is an easy enough condition to fulfill that I figure it counts as Common (+3 duration factors?), making it last 24 hours. Still examining the mechanics behind this. Also, since this spell is cast on the sword, rather than on Samael, it shouldn't count for Spell Tolerance.

That should mean that at any one moment, Samael has 3 active spells, 1 of which is personal. That still allows him to cast 3 more active spells, 1 of which can be a personal spell without any ill effect. I'm really beginning to appreciate high gnosis dots.

Acanthus/Adamantine Arrow
Gnosis: 2
Exp Gained: 40
Exp Used: 30
Arcane Exp Gained: 5
Arcane Exp Used: 5

>.> I still don't know what Legacy to get. Ariadne's is tempting but I'm trying to get more source books. But then again, I have to get gnosis three first.

Wow, Sevens only has 40xp? o.0 I thought she'd be around 70+ as well...

Oh, but you did alternate between Sonnet and her...

ADD: I still don't have continuous Internet access, so if anyone's willing to post chapter summaries, I'd appreciate it.

Game day today! I'm excited... *starts preparing*

Oh bloody-handed spawn of the Exarchs, that was fun.

More detailed AAR and transcription of Aeshma's letter when I have the time to work it up.

@AAS & TBC: Read the Arrow sourcebook. Fine read, and great for developing characters or flavor. And the intro story is one of my favorites in recent memory. Philosophy, outlook, training, factions, and fluffy bits. You can ignore the story of the fall of Atlantis and look up the Arrow today.

Sevens may also want to investigate the Brotherhood of the Demon Wind legacy. iirc, it deals with Time, Space, and Fate magic, and would fit her nicely.

Tome of the Watchtowers. Read it if you have the time. It's got a very good section on Creative Thaumaturgy and what can be done with the 5 ranks of Arcana proficiency, and in-depth on what magic "feels like."

Kudos to BJ by the way. We needed our NWoD gaming fix.

EDIT:
I'll also be reading up on Astral Plane, Temenos, Oneiros, and all the other unusual planes of existence, as I do want to explore those if possible and plausible, and Samael's plans to gain new dots in Spirit dovetail nicely with that.

@BJ: Checked the M:TA book, yeah, you're right about the Arcana costs. That means I'll have to fix my XP expenditures a bit. Dropping the Library merit, and keeping the Spirit and 1 dot Firearms skill.

Aeshma wrote:

To you, the misguided of the Pentacle orders,

Once again, you have proven to bear the hubris of thinking you deserve to own artifacts. I have confiscated the Cartwright Emerald from your hungry grasp. But worry not, for I have forgiven you of your gluttony.

Indeed, I am willing to forgive many of your sins...Even if the sin is murder. You are fellow Awakened souls, and I urge you to see the truth: Murder is a sin.

I come peaceably, but you'll pardon me if I take caution. You've killed Domina Janet, after all. I am too young to suffer the same fate. Nonetheless, I am eager to meet you. When I find a rendezvous that is safe for both our parties, I shall contact you. Hopefully, you will see the error of your ways with my help.

Until our inevitable meeting, I shall pray continually for your awakened (sic) souls.

AESHMA

Samael's comments: "Murder is a crime? Coming from the Seers? That's rich. They're commiting the most heinous murder of all: the murder of the human soul.

If she wants to talk, fine. But if we do meet her, come prepared for anything and everything. Undue paranoia is better than walking like sheep to the slaughter. And warn the Bastion. The Interfector and the rest of the old guard of the Order of the Bastion may be scum, but they're effective scum, and in the event that we don't make it out, they need to know.

Arrows may want to inform the local caucus as well to give them a heads-up, if we agree. And does anyone know a good medic? You boys and girls are going to need some work."

EDIT: Prophecy coming up when I have time to transcribe it.

To flesh out River Coins a bit more, here's his current backstory:

After getting Moth, formerly Raven, knocked up, his parents promptly forced him to marry her, and set him up with a water purification business "so he would be financially independent". This is laughable, since RC still gets an allowance from his mom, and a stipend for his fledgling family, and he also managed to use this upheaval in his life as yet another excuse to not getting kicked out of UP, despite being course-less again. He'd long lost interest in Moth even before she told him she was pregnant, and barely cares for their child.

Thanks to the weird luck River Coins has, the main office of his business ended up being built on fortuitous ley lines, allowing mana to gush out and settle in the water that's being purified there. River Coins, despite being dumber than a brick wall, managed to notice this occult happening, and has figured out the exact process to ensure all the mana goes to his personal stockpile of mineral water bottles. He then decided to make the top floor of the building his bachelor pad, as well as his Sanctum, for the times when he finds his home with Moth unbearable - which seems to be most days of the week, including holidays.

Spending 2 exp to purchase a dot in Allies (Mysterium) w/ Sonnet being her first go to for obvious reasons. Being that her Adamantine Arrow cause is to protect her family, she's spent so much time helping Mysterium mages that she knows a decent number of them well enough to bother them for small favors from time to time.

Okay. I hope someone posts a summary of the game as a whole on the other thread, so that we may continue the tradition that made our first Mage games successful. Also, tell me if there's an aspect of my GMing style that you do not enjoy, and I'll see what we can work out.

On backlash; I will finalize the house rule on Tuesday, October 28, just before the game starts.

On rotes: As I mentioned before, you can learn any of the rotes in the core rulebook, even if the order mentioned is not yours. If there are two or more rotes for a certain spell, though, and one of the orders is your own, then you have to choose the one your order prefers. If neither pertains to your order, on the other hand, you will take the primary rote mentioned.

However, my rules are different when it comes to supplement books. First, if you purchased an ebook of the said supplement, please printout a copy if you want to use it for a game. Also, do advise me if you took such a rote before the actual game day. Finally, if the rote outside of the core rulebook refers to an order, you cannot learn that rote if you are not a member of that order.

On supplement books: There are tons of supplement books out there for your perusal, and the sheer amount of readings may be overwhelming. My suggestion is to read the order book that applies to your character (for fleshing him/her out) and Legacies: The Sublime. Stick to one or two books at a time, and don't worry about not getting the spellcasting too much. I'm sure everyone will get the hang f it over time.

@tbc, AAS, BB: Your characters took lethal wounds, right? In an emergency, you can patch yourselves up with mana. 3 points will remove one lethal wound. It's a seriously heavy hit to your reserves, but I think some of you guys are suffering from wound penalties, so in an emergency, you might need it.

If things are going at a quick pace, we might need to find a mage with life 3+ to treat your wounds.

EDIT: BJ informs me that there is one Adamantine Arrow medic stationed in the AFP's V Luna Hospital. Shiva the Orphan.

"That said, Shiva can be a bloody-handed bitch when it comes to healing other magi. She's the type of Thyrsus that prefers to hurt things rather than heal them. You do not want to mess with her on Fight Night.

Oh, and River Coins? For the love of whatever you hold sacred, do not try to hit on Shiva. She's been known to do painful things to people, and her bedside manner makes Dr. House look like Mother-effing Teresa. By the Keys of Solomon, if you give her a reason to be pissed off, I'm going to just stand there and smile when she takes a scalpel to your nuts, capice?

Rev: I actually didn't take any wounds this time, and I still have a full complement of mana. Remind me to hand a mineral water bottle to Sevens and Mack next session though.

I'm also considering if I should buy Life3 next.

Mage: Diliman by Night

I figure there are enough Arrows in the group that this could use some working up. Categories are based on those described in the Adamantine Arrow sourcebooks.

Adamantine Arrow Caucus: The Musang Covenant

Age: Modern. The Musang Covenant is a child of the 20th Century. The Japanese occupation of Manila disrupted the occult powerbase of the city as local and foreign mages fought each other for control of the night. The Musang Covenant was born of that conflict, as young Filipino arrows banded together into a guerrilla organization, taking the Musang bearcat as its totem animal, training its members to be individually competent and able to protect their cabals independent of the Covenant’s supervision.

Agenda: Training. The Musangs were born from guerrilla war. Rather than turning themselves into a magically hyper-efficient but ultimately tiny force, the young Arrows of Manila instead honed their skills amongst themselves, and then spread outward, each Arrow either becoming the nucleus and protective shield defending guerrilla cells, or protecting the shell-shocked local cabals. This tradition of independence is still maintained. Elder members of the Covenant train their juniors, who are then expected to be able to handle the concerns of their individual cabals. Only when truly serious matters rise up does the Musang Covenant act in concert. That said however, the Covenant isn’t blind, and members are expected to share information and expertise amongst each other. If something is beyond the power of a single Talon, then the whole Covenant needs to know before they’re caught by surprise.

Leadership: Competent/Veteran (ultimately the ST’s call. Competent= 1st/2nd degree Adepts. Veteran= 3rd/4th degree Adepts or Master) (description assumes competent) The leaders of the Musang tend towards veteran soldiers, martial arts instructors, cops, and others in a martial field. They pass down physical and magical training to their juniors, but otherwise, tend to let them fend for themselves. Existence is war, and every Arrow should be prepared to die every day. No Arrow in the city currently has the magical strength to claim the title of Adamant Sage, so the senior members of the Musang take the title of Thunderbolt Guardians, as befitting teachers of the arts of war.

Politics: ? Aloof? Don’t really know what would be appropriate.

Customs/Rites:
The Musang Covenant holds “Fight Nights” that they expect their members to attend at least once each month. At Fight Night, Arrows cross-train in various physical and magical disciplines, learning from each other’s skills, forming bonds of camaraderie, and sharing the latest news about potentially dangers and arcane happenings in Manila.

Samael Vignettes:
The Throne

I remember the ritual of initiation into the Clavicularius well. The finale takes place in the Astral Plane, within the great Temenos Sanctuary that we call the Great Temple of Solomon, in imitation of Shelomoh Bar-Dawood, Solomon Son of David, known as the Wise. It is a sublime sanctuary, the glory of Solomon’s design augmented by Atlantean magic impossible in the Fallen World. Ten feet above the floor, running in bands across the walls and pillars of the Great Temple are scribed Atlantean runes and sigils, pentacles and glyphs naming the demons of the self, the flaws of the mind and soul, the very weaknesses that we seek to master.

I walk down the center of the aisle, flanked on each side by my fellow Keepers of the Keys of Solomon. As I ascend towards the throne, the magic of the Temple works a wonder. I abase myself before the throne in all my finery, the gilt robes and regalia weighing me down. I realize that this form kowtowing itself, broken, before the throne of power is is not my true self. It is my demon, emblem of my weakness, my flaws. Belial snarls, but the power of my Awakened soul shackles him, forcing him to kneel in my presence as I ascend to my throne armoured in adamant, bearing a crown of forged thaumium. On this day, my Regal Self triumphs over the Fallen Self, and Belial bows to Samael, the Venom of God.

But some nights, I wake up in a cold sweat, from a vision that I half fear is real, for on some nights, I relive this moment, only it is I who must kneel, broken before the mocking laughter and diabolical gaze of Belial, enthroned upon the temple of my inner soul.

**
The Beast and the Harlot

It’s a long drive to V Luna, and the rush hour traffic isn’t helping. I’m tempted to use the same trick to warp the axes of Space around River Coins’ car, but then again, the trip gives me time to think.

The Beast. Is it Beast? I don’t think so. It’s been years since we’ve seen that mysterious magus, and though I suspect that he’s something more than just another one of our kind, I can’t be sure. Besides, the card drawn was the Devil. Powerful Fate magics were involved. It can’t be coincidence. The Devil is the sign of the Path of Scourging. My path.

The Harlot. Ananke’s words ring in my mind. The Star. Is it her? Dimples. She was, no, is perfect. Or at least she’s damned good at playing the part. Honors student. Highly connected. Charming, graceful, stunningly beautiful. A dame to kill for. My old mentor on the Supernal path, and more. Sweat-slick thighs twined together. The casual way she brushes aside a lock of hair. The taste of her lips, heady as the finest vintage. Our bodies locked together, sharing a mutual fire. A smile, bright as the sun, a heart cold as the void.

“She’s the one that got away, isn’t she, Samael?” My reflection in the window taunts me. I suppress a surge of irritation, keeping myself from answering out loud. The rest of the group already knows I’m crazy, why flaunt it any further? How much of all that was a function of my need, I wonder? She was and still is perfect. The pride and joy of the Council of Seven. A rising star in the halls of Awakened, a blazing nova among the hearts of the Sleepers. How much of that relationship was me feeding my own inadequacies, my own fears of weakness, my obsessive need to vindicate myself as her equal and her chosen? A crazier thought: How much of that was her using me to stoke her own fires and satisfy her own needs? It was all about the oblation to her, the act of lovemaking was much a ritual to draw mana down from the heavens, as it was an actual deed of affection, remember Belial? It was all about the mana. And when you take all that away, how much of what’s left in that relationship is an actual liking, a true respect for the warm body lying beside you in bed? We’re both cold-blooded, manipulative bastards at heart, she’s just better (or is it worse?) at controlling it than I am.

“Tang ina, you are one repressed son of a bitch, Samael. Does everything need a reason? You needed her, she tolerated you, and should anything else matter?”

I fish out the black knight chesspiece that I keep as a focusing tool, idly running my fingers across the Atlantean runes I carved on its surface. Better repressed than possessed. Better a cold flame than an uncontrollable inferno. I still remember my first days in the Council. Angry. Violent. Irrepressible. Bloody-mindedly stupid. So unable to control myself. So willing to feed you and make you stronger, Belial.

“This entire externalization is bad for you, do you know that, Samael? I am you—“

Yes, myself, all the bad, dysfunctional, megalomaniacal urges thrown in. Call it sin, call it weakness, whatever it is, Belial, you are myself at my very worst. And you will not control me. Now begone, demon. I’m thinking.

“A parting shot, O mighty Goeticist: what if I’m the only thing about you that she actually loved?”

Love? She loved you just about as much as she loved a vibrator, and if she could have replaced you with one, Belial, she would have. And if she really did love you, that part of me that contains all my idiocy, my pig-headed pride and rage, what does that tell you about Dimples the Elder, Belial, that she would love one as weak as you demon?

Samael's Notes
Threats Dossier: The Seers of the Throne

Well, it looks like we're in the deep end now. We've pissed off the Seers of the Throne, killed two of their Proximi, and almost beat the :consored: out of one of their priests. The :consored: has hit the fan, so we need to enter defensive mode.

I'm compiling a set of notes here based on the information given to us by Alab and a few things I've heard from the Arrow grapevine and the few things that master Suleiman mentioned in passing.

The Seers are an order of mages also descended from the Atlantean tradition (I hate having to use that term too much. The First City is so much more evocative). Where they differ from the original Diamond Orders is in their objectives. The Seers of The Throne agenda is supposedly to keep humanity dumb, stupid, and Asleep in service to their masters, the Exarchs. How much of this is fact and how much is Pentacle/Seer propaganda, I can't tell.

The Seers seem to organize in groups called Ministries and Pylons, roughly analogous to our "Orders" and "Cabals". If there is a middle group between the Ministries and Pylons, sort of how our Consilii stands as a middle ground between the Orders and our Cabals, we haven't heard any inkling of it.

The Ministries
Alab detailed the operations of four Ministries when we talked to him after the concert. Are they the only four? He didn't seem to think so, as he does mention the existence of other smaller Ministries. In my training, I recall Suleiman mention "the Great Ministries" when talking about the Seers, but when I pressed him for more information. the old man clammed up. Here are the four we do know about:

The Panopticon Ministry
The Panopticon deals in surveillance and information, with an eye towards secret control and power. Imagine a Big Brother state with magical resources at their disposal. Their symbol seems to be the eye, and apparently, their most powerful mages can use this same symbolic representation to breach even the best wards. Be aware that surveillance can come in both magical and mundane forms. I learned that the hard way when a simple microphone bug penetrated my home wards. I will need to start upgrading the bungalow's physical security as well as magical defenses.

The Praetorian Ministry
The Praetorian Ministry deals in war and violence. Where the Adamantine Arrow sees war and conflict as a metaphor for existence, a purifying ground for the soul, the Praetorians see battle and violence as an end in and of itself. Violence begets violence, fear begets fear. Those worthy of the Exarchs rise above such petty things, while the mass of humanity is kept weak, and afraid, ever fearful for their lives. They also have at their disposal a powerful line of Proximi, the Myrmidons, powerful warriors who seem to be able to manifest powers that are almost magical in nature, much like many Legacy Attainments. If the word of the Myrmidon is to be believed, they name their Exarch as The General.

The Paternoster Ministry
The Paternoster deals in blind faith. Alab was very sketchy when detailing this force, but their agenda seems to be the manipulation of faith and religion to keep humanity's soul servile and abased. When a human grovels and keeps his face turned to the ground in service to a graven idol, they lose sight of the supernal truth that religion can represent. Aeshma seems to have been taken in by this ministry, and if we know more about this organization, we may be able to figure out how to turn her against the Seers. They name their patron Exarch as The Father.

The Hegemonic Ministry
The Hegemons. They are the New World Order, The Establishment, The Man. They are blind control and ultranationalistic fervor. They are unity at all cost. They are the system, the fascist corporate state, bereft of all checks and balances, all human morality. The Panopticon rules through fear of information. The Praetorian rules through force. The Paternoster warps the soul with false faith. But the Hegemony I fear most of all for they stand for absolute and total control and the extinction of the human soul.

Legacy: Tamers of Fire
Source: MTA: Legacies the Ancient (page 39 -47)
Requirement: Obrimos, most likely NOT a Guardians of the Veil member, must have a Flaw (whether Mental, Physical, Social or Mystical) upon joining or eventually (I'll need to work with BJ on this - there are so many ways to give River Coins a flaw it's funny. Razz We can make one of his current personal weaknesses an outright flaw, put him under a curse or geas he can't break, or introduce more dramu into his life to break him one way or the other), must be willing to undergo trials of ordeal to prove him or herself to Mentor.
Potential Mentor for River Coins: Either Alab or Spartacus

BJ: Is this enough info, or do you need me to flesh it out a bit more?

Samael
Shadow War pt1: The Home Front

Samael carefully drew the Atlantean runes on the paper, letting his mind bleed out all the excess adrenaline from the day's events. He needed to focus.

"Evening, prof. Hey, aren't those Alicia's test papers?"

"Ah, Zephon. Yes, well, as I told her, that submission is worth less than the paper it's printed on. At least now they're doing somebody some good."

Samael's research assistant and unofficial apprentice shut the door to the office and helped him set up the wards inside the professor's room.

"There. We're safe from unusual forms of intrusion, at least. And I took the time to inspect the room earlier with Rivercoins. No bugs."

"Well, sir, they could be using a shotgun mike, or one of those neat little laser resonance jobs that can read vibrations off a pane of glass..."

Samael groaned. "One problem at a time, Zephon. Besides, what with our latest attempt at laying a trap for them, our friends are going to be doubly suspicious of sending human agents to investigate us."

"Fair enough boss. So do we get down to business?"

"Sit, Zeph. So, how did your sweep go?"

"Look, master, I'm not a cloak and dagger. I shoot things. I shoot things real good. In fact the only reason I don't shoot bullseyes in every shot and target sheet I get in the Rifle/Pistol Team is because actually competing on a national level would take up too much of my time. I'm a shooter. I'm not built for this cloak and dagger stuff."

"The ability to take a shot is useless if you can't use your head to find a target. Or if you can't tell when you need to take a shot, and when you don't need to. You came to me to be trained, so I'm going to train you. A Warlock has mastery of both Space and Mind, Zeph. You have to use both. Now answer my question."

"Well, the story seems to have stuck. As far as most people are concerned, it was frat violence gone wrong. Those few who might have seen what actually went down are now being bombarded with news reports about what "really" happened."

"Good. With a little help from the Guardians, that should stick. One more problem out of the way. So, how much longer are you going to be my apprentice, Zeph? If your experiments can be trusted, you shouldn't be too far from being able to teleport. You've already begun to learn how to set up a primitive ban on an area."

"Wha...how'd you find that out?"

"You're being sloppy with concealing your resonance, Zeph. I was taking a stroll around the lagoon when mage sight gave me a sudden gut-wrenching sense that things weren't quite right. A near subliminal urging telling me to go away. Naturally, that piqued my interest."

Zephon snorted. "So you actually go wandering around with your mage sight open? Jeez, talk about paranoid."

Samael raised an eyebrow and took a mock accusatory tone. "And you don't? 'Existence is War', boyo, and you should always be ready. Besides, you have to be aware of changes in your turf. I almost thought somebody was messing around, perhaps even our...friends, until I recognized your resonance on the ban. What were you doing out there, anyway?"

"Well, Alicia and I, we needed some private time, so I just made sure it was really private. Speaking of which, are we done here, boss?"

"For now. Go on, run off, and keep an eye open. Our Seer friends will want to strike back, so be careful."

As Zephon left, Samael fired up his laptop. Well, things seemed to be going well for his little sideline. A buyer had approached him regarding a trio of pre-colonial Spanish manuscripts in his collection, and another person had agreed to purchase a first edition of Lafcadio Hearn's In Ghostly Japan for a princely sum. He took his usual commission and then opened up a mailing program, sending a message out to one of the usual dead drops.

From: manuscriptmiddleman<a>gmail.com
To: housingdev<a>yahoo.com.ph
Subj: book auction
I found a buyer for the books. The bidding war went higher then expected, so we got a real good take. There should be more than enough there to fix the lingering damage from the storm season, with a lot left over extra. That should mean you can get a lot of new stuff for the house, maybe some new toys for the kids as well.

As usual, I've already deducted our agreed upon commission.
ManuscriptMiddleman

All in all, as innocuous a letter as possible. Samael was always careful about vetting letters that had anything to do with the Adamantine Arrow's Refuge. He'd heart much about the secret island where the Arrow was rumored to keep the families of its high ranking mages, but he'd never been there. Perhaps Colonel Magtibay, aka Sheeva, might have known the location, but Samael had never asked her, which was just as well. The fewer who know the secret, the better. If the Seers ever caught him, he'd never be able to tell them where it was. The Arrow would have to find another person to launder funds for them, but the Island's location would still be secure.

Samael yawned and shut down the laptop. May as well bunk in, he mused. Can't do much plotting when you're too tired to think.

//end part 1

Rough plans:
Shadow War part 2: Fishing. (Samael plans to search for info re the Seer Priest)
Shadow War part 3: (Samael has a talk with his master RE: Aeshma and Dimples)

(Note: Zephon was a Dimaculangan and Sons' character who was supposed to be Samael's student. Mastigos gunman, Rifle/Pistol Team, and Co7. Very rarely comes in for training and generally pigheadedly rebellious. Samael prefers to send him off to do his own stuff, occasionally giving advice. As he's not really supposed to be around much, I figure he's not worth spending dots in Ally/Contact. Samael has told him that as soon as he can learn how to teleport, Zeph is his own man, no longer his student.)

Revan, you might want to edit the email addresses on your post in such a way that they will not look like email address for bots. Unless you want those email adds to be filled up with junk emails of course.

Enlightenment from the Barrel of a Gun

Sevens woke up to dull pain. She forced herself to a sit, ignoring the dull spasms from her body. She tried to remember what happened. They had just met Aeshma and then battle…and then darkness…

“Easy or the stitches will open.”

Sevens looked to her side. Sonnet was sitting with her legs crossed, a thick book on her lap. She closed the book. “How are you feeling then?”

Sevens made a face. “…”

“Right,” Sonnet said. “You’ve been out of it for four days. You were in the ICU for a while. They just cleared you to be moved here yesterday in fact.” She yawned and stretched her arms, standing up and dropping the book on a small table filled with food and papers. Sevens looked at the paper closely. Sonnet noticed and grinned. “In a few days time, a horde of students will be trying to look for me for their final grade. I don’t know if I’ll be in the University by then though,” she said. “This lousy hospital hasn’t had its internet connection restored yet. Do you want candy?”

Sevens shook her head and turned away.

Sonnet frowned. “Moth told me what happened,” she said. “It wasn’t like you were at your peak then.” Sevens didn’t turn back around. “Tch, you’re going to sulk again like when Raja downed you, aren’t you? I’d tweak your ears if it weren’t for the fact that the stitches might get disturbed…maybe I’ll it do either way and just get someone to heal you afterwards.”

Sevens turned around and stuck her tongue out before facing away again.

“You’re such a child,” Sonnet said. She dragged the chair closer and tweaked Sevens’ ear, forcing Sevens to turn her face around. “Now look closely,” Sonnet said and she reached out towards the table, picking the book up as if the considerable distance was nothing. “I can’t teach you martial arts,” she said. “But I can at least start teaching you the basics of the space arcana if that will get you out of your funk. It’s not like you have anything better to do in this room—unless you want to rot.”

Sevens said nothing, of course, but neither did she look away.

“Good.”

@xtian: As far as I know, neither of these accounts exist anyway. Confusion to the spambots!

Samael
Shadow War part 2: Phishing

The day's workload was over, and now that the infernal little details of 2nd semester registration were over and done with, I can finally get back onto the case. The dead of night was a fitting time for these things. Fresh with a surge of power from tonight's oblations, it shouldn't be that difficult to flex a little mystical muscle. I take out a paper and pen, and then I begin to think.

Focus. Clear your mind Samael. If you want this to work, you will need perfect recall of the events of that day. You were able to get a good long look at "Father Lorenzo"'s face, but that won't be enough to get a confidently accurate likeness.

Think. Actually seeing the events of that afternoon again would require a fair aptitude with the arcana of Time. But I can't shape that yet. Hate to say it, but times like this, I miss having that stoner Devilgrass around. None of the basic applications of the Mind arcanum seem to fit the bill either.

Consider the basic disciplines. Observe their functions. And if no clear function exists...make one.

The Practice of Compelling allows you to make subtle tweaks and nudges to a phenomenon, but precision is necessary here, and the small improvements of Compelling might not cut it. The Practice of Ruling is a bit more flexible, but really, the answer here should be obvious: The Practice of Perfecting. The elementary application of Perfection to the Arcanum of Mind is fairly simple: the ability to improve one's basic mental capabilities, to sharpen the intellect, make one's wits lightning-quick, or to harden one's resolve. But perfecting can be used to improve other objects within the arcana's purview. And memory is a construct of the mind.

Perfecting it is then. Trace the tangled skein of thought and memory back to that afternoon. With the keen blade of reason, isolate the memory. Use the High Speech to focus, its arcane resonance shaping the imago of the spell even as you hold the thought in place. Let the spell feed on the latent power of your sanctum's hallow, and then release it.

Everything about the afternoon floods back in a chaotic maelstrom. The roar of the shotgun, the iron will with which I wrestled the Seer's mind, the taste of the Persian food. The bite of the buckshot as it chews into my left arm. Dammit. You'll need a tighter focus.

Again. Trace the thought back to that afternoon. Refine your search, limit your perceptions to the interior of the UP Chapel. Recall the man standing at the altar bearing priestly robes and a twisted holy symbol in subtle mockery of the Faith. Focus on his face. A proud and lordly mien, hawkish features and receding hairline. His face and brow are lined, as if in a perpetual sneer. Isolate this image. Perfect it. Cut away imprecision and the bias of your thoughts and focus entirely on the sensory perception. A face, not quite as haughty or as aggressive as your first recall, but certainly suggestive of these things.

There. Hold that thought. The next step of course is to transfer that thought into a more tangible form. Straight into paper. This would be so much easier with the Matter Arcanum's Practice of Compelling, or perhaps even Forces. I could literally burn this image straight onto the page. I guess I'll have to draw it instead. Glad I took those Fine Arts GE's. But I guess I can cheat, ever so slightly.

Take that memory. Grasp it in the imago of a sensory hallucination. Easy enough now that I've gotten the hang of the Practice of Patterning. Sculpt that likeness into an actual image and overlay it over the paper. It's slightly disconcerting to see Father Lorenzo's face literally on the blank sheer, but this way, I can trace his likeness directly onto the paper. This would have been much simpler if I had a functional knowledge of the other Arcana, but if a Willworker has the will, he'll find a way, or failing that, make one.

**

I take a look at the drawing. Well, it's not an Amorsolo, but I figure it'll do. I scan it into my computer and print out a few copies. And then, just to be safe, I hard-delete the original file. I don't know the tricks that the Panopticon can do with their scrying magics, so I may as well play it safe. One copy goes to Sheeva. If we don't make it, then at least a senior Arrow has Father Lorenzo's likeness. Another goes to Alab. True, he might go berserk and go straight for Father Lorenzo, but he's a big boy, he can handle himself. And if he draws out a bigger Seer response, then all the better for us. More links to backtrace. Another copy goes to the Interfector. I don't like the Guardians, but this is what they're good at. Ferreting out information. Hopefully we might be able to get some good intel. A quick check of parish records should be able to answer the question of whether this guy is really legit or not.

Time's a wasting. Two dead Myrmidons and an injured Seer priest. I doubt he'll turn up in a hospital for treatment, but I suppose stranger things have happened. They'll be readying their own counter soon, so we need to beat them to the punch.

And of course, there's the matter of Aeshma. Condescending, naive, but not a bad girl, all in all. The Seers are unlikely to expose her again, but if they do, we might be able to turn her. I don't think she's got a full grasp of just what her new friends really are, and what they truly do to the human soul. It would be a worthy goal, trying to turn one of them over to our side. A fine revenge for all the injury they've done to us so far.

Hmm. I'll have to consult with Master Suleiman in a while, but we're getting more leads and ideas. Hopefully, that gives us the ability to strike back soon.

On the Interwebs

A day later...net is restored. Sonnet still hasn't posted his students' grades though...her inbox is full of ignored (and desperate) messages from her students. <_<;;

Tabula Rasa is available (11:00:30 AM)
xxSugarcoatedxx (11:01:23 AM): Oh hai thar! ;3
Tabula Rasa (11:01:25AM): Oh, hey. I heard you were hospitalized?
xxSugarcoatedxx (11:01:26 AM): Yep. Don't remind me. Sonnet is watching over me. T_T
Tabula Rasa (11:01:30AM): Sonnet? Ouch. So what got you hospitalized this time?
xxSugarcoatedxx (11:01:40 AM): Seer trouble. Which reminds me!
Tabula Rasa (11:02:03 AM): Here we go...what is it then?
xxSugarcoatedxx (11:02:20 AM): I need
xxSugarcoatedxx (11:02:22 AM): information on the Jollibee takeover a few years back. You know anything about that?
Tabula Rasa (11:02:30 AM): I'll have to check...
Tabula Rasa (11:02:36 AM): Alternatively... you could try asking the Metropolitans? They usually know what's going on in the city.
xxSugarcoatedxx (11:02:40 AM): The Metropolitans? o.oa
Tabula Rasa (11:02:50 AM): The House of Ariadne. The city lovers. Ask Sonnet about them. The Metropolitans are usually in good terms with our order.
xxSugarcoatedxx (11:03:00 AM): *hugs* Okay! Thanks, Tabs!
Tabula Rasa (11:03:05 AM): Don't mention it. n.n;;
