Yeah, I haven't played in a while so I want to keep up to speed. What splats are due to be released and what's the current hype in the D&D community?

Nothing much really, since it's been a while since someone hosted a campaign.

Probably you'll have interest in the Assassin, shadow striker (there's a thread for it)
Divine Power (aka Paladin Power Book) isn't much, nothing extremely good/hax about it, other than the new paladin powers, and pacifist cleric.

Primal Power is coming, it has Swarm Druid!! (when u polymorph, you could choose to be a form of swarm of rats/insects/any Tiny natural creatures.) And you're a swarm, meaning you take reduced damaged (equal to Con) against melee and ranged attacks! Powers concentrates on bursts. Looking 4ward on it.

DMG2 was suppose to come, but they had problems.

Other than that are Dragon Mag new stuff, like Githzerai. Little knowledge about it.

DMG2 has come; it's just not in the Philippines yet. It has rules for chandeliers as an obstacle (yes, you heard me right; chandeliers!), companion characters aka cohorts (gonna use that for ereth's unicorn), and lots of advice for DM's. I am yet to see it, though, so I can't comment on whether it's good or bad yet.

I posted my thoughts on the assassin here.

PHB3 is looking more and more promising. We already know about the psion, monk, and hybrid classes. In addition, skill powers will make an appearance. They are essentially utility powers that you can take in place of a class skill as long as you have training in that skill. Lots of good ones there. Also, the seeker class debuts at ddi this month:

The next class from Player's Handbook 3 is here, exclusively on D&D Insider! Learn about the seeker, an archer who controls the battlefield through the mystical powers granted by her connection to the divine.

I'm guessing it's a divine class. Laughing

Oh, and the Old Man with the Canaries is a level 36 solo soldier.

Oh I thought Old Man was a Solo Leader. Or is that a different version of him?
I recall seeing the solo leader in the preview of Draconomicon 2.

Leader is a keyword that can be applied to a monster of any role that has powers supporting a team. You can have a Controller (leader), a Brute (leader), etc.

Oh right. I forgot, sorry. Must be the fact I haven't played D&D for a while. Laughing
I just remembered him being a leader. I forgot its main role.

I saw the seeker; apparently, it's a primal controller. @__@

It basically imbues its projectiles with spirits, which assaults its foes over a burst. Imagine the long range of a bow, and then at will bursts.

Okay. Release months:

PHB3 - March
MM3 - June

Demonomicon @_@ - July

DS Campaign Guide - August
DS Creature Catalog - August

The Dark Sun format is weird. The Campaign Guide is basically a Player/DM resource, which I don't like. Remember the 3.5 Eberron CS and how every player knew KaiusIII is a vampire? Campaign secrets like that will be no secret at all when players and DMs are reading the same book.

Although, having its own MM means that they plan to have A LOT of new monsters. Even if it turns out to be only about 120-ish pages long, that's still a significant addition to the repertoire of any DM, DS or not.

Also, the Demonomicon book intrigues me. I hope it has stats for Jubilex and Pazuzu (Pale Night would be cool, too XD)

Is it true that PH3 won't have Shadow power source, thus not including Assassin?

Yes. The assassin is a DDi exlusive content like the revenant - meaning it will never (or rather, they have no current plans of) reprinting it in dead-tree format.

EDIT: And hmm, it seems the DS Monster Compendium will be softcover. That means it'll just be about 70-120-ish pages long, but it also means that it's (theoretically) cheaper.

They seem to be in the process of reviving a few sacred cows that have been "killed off" by 4th edition.

*We already know the change to Magic Missile, which in effect is an attempt to make it feel like the old one. For the record, I'm one of the people who think this is a good change that makes the power more "controller-ish," though it's still not the most optimized choice.

*Random treasures will show up soon, possibly in Mordenkainen's Magnificent Emporium (aka AV3). It is presented as an alternative to the parcel system.

*PHB and Essentials magic items will be common, other printed stuff will be uncommon, and other magic items going forward will be rare. Basically, rare items cannot be created by players with the Enchant Magic Item ritual, while Uncommon items will be "DM discretion." I think this is similar to a 2E mechanic, but I'm not sure.

*Feats in Essentials going forward will no longer have tier prerequisites, but may have more stringent requirements. Feat trees are still avoided, though, in favor of self-updating feats per tier. (This is okay, but I wanna see Improved initiative fixed such that it "upgrades" to epic initiative by itself)

Now that the ressurected sacred cows are aside, here are some other news:

*Ravenloft is the 2011 Campaign Setting (I know, I know, they previously said that they will fold Ravenloft into core D&D, but you know how WotC is). However, unlike previous setting, it will not get the 3-book treatment. It will instead be a boxed, stand-alone set, similar to Gamma World. There might be cards with randomized booster packs, though details are sketchy.

*Speaking of randomized sh*t (because seriously, I don't see it selling at all to the DnD crowd), 2011 sees the release of a DnD product called "Fortune Cards." I have no idea what it does yet (though it does remind me of WHFRPG 3E's wound cards).

*They say the tentative date for DMG3 is 2012.

*One book scheduled for 2011 will be the Neverwinter Campaign Guide. Which is the 4th 4E FR book. It will include the Bladesinger class, and will be built like an Essential class.

*There was an Astral Sea book and an Elemental Chaos book, and don't forget the recent Demonomicon. Shadowfell won't get such a book. It will instead get a boxed set. Which, in some ways, is better. No mention on what they'll do with the Feywild yet.

*No new DDi announcements. At all.

Discuss.

If I didn't know any better, I would think they plan to merge MtG and DnD at some point. Or it's possible they're just trying to apply concepts from one game to the other, and perhaps vice versa (much more likely, I think).

Other than that, I'd also add that Psionic Power is out. I like the new Ardent build, because it confers a damage boost to allies, and the Shaper is pretty neat, as it gives you a "Psicrystal" which doubles as a second Psion origin space thingy.

January 2011 Ampersand

*DDM is now officially cancelled. Minis production have been slowing down on their end, so this one wasn't entirely unexpected. Still, they haven't even finished their dragons yet! We still need a gargantuan green, a huge black with no rider, huge catastrophic dragons in general, huge metallics aside from copper, iron, and gold...

If they at least use the collector's sets to shell out the remaining dragons, then I'll be one happy gamer.

*3 books have been cancelled. Some see it as doom and gloom for the future of the game, but less books for me -> less things that I feel like I will miss out on. I still wish they'd come out with an epic-level DMG, though.

*Change in Dragon/Dungeon distribution. No more compiled issues, but individual files for each article will be espoused. This is interesting, but seeing as I'm not a current DDi subscriber, this isn't a big issue for me. When (not if) I do re-subscribe, however, I feel like I will have some trouble hunting and downloading everything.

*Plans to pursue tokens going forward - Yay! This promises to be a lot cheaper than minis. And honestly, I always cringe whenever a DM plops a bear onto the mat and says, "imagine it's a giant boar..." (eff, I think I even caught myself doing this once... >.>)

Discuss!

A bit-off topic but is there a lore about the beings in background image (the fiend holding a lady and giant people with flashlight eyes)?

@Xtian: AFAIK it doesn't tie into any current storyline, but is there purely for nostalgia as it is reminiscent of some classic art or something. I'm not sure though.

In other news:

DDXP New Product Seminar Coverage

One thing that caught my interest is the apparent announcement of a 4E Book of Vile Darkness. It ties into their latest movie attempt (also called the BoVD), and its book cover was not fully revealed. As in, they had to cover up something, but they wouldn't say what it was. Shocked

Update on the BoVD, taken from EnWorld:

thalmin wrote:
Book of Vile Darkness a D&D Supplement by Robert J. Schwalb

The Book of Vile Darkness has existed since the dawn of the Dungeons & Dragons game, but only the most indomitable minds dare to look upon the malevolent thoughts and forbidden secrets bound therein!

In addition to showcasing characters and locations featured in the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons: The Book of Vile Darkness SyFy Original Movie, this roleplaying game product game product is intended for Dungeon Masters looking to broaden their campaigns to include dark subject matter and truly evil threats. It features a detailed look at the nature of evil and the complex challenge of confronting the many dilemmas found within the deepest shadows.

It includes:
A 32-page book of character options, filled with malignant secrets and musings to inspire players;
A 96-page game supplement for Dungeon Masters that includes an extensive toolkit to create and use truly evil villains, guidance for running games with evil adventures, and game statistics for some of the most despicable creatures to infest any campaign world;
A full-color, double-sided poster map presenting iconic evil sites for heroes to explore.
December 20, 2011 $29.95

I guess it's going to be a boxed set. The page count isn't too inspiring, though.

I guess they'll mostly be cosmetic changes? IDK. I remember PHBR:D was actually quite short, but it did have a slew of useful options. So I think I'll wait and see.

So, Dragon #399 reportedly has themes that work outside of Dark Sun. I haven't seen them yet, but it interests me. Razz

I've seen the discussion about it on the WotC boards, and from what I can work out from what they say, themes provides a feature/power when you take it, then provides additional features at Lvl 5 and then at Lvl 10. They also have powers you could swap with, though I think most are just at heroic levels. There's Heroes for Hire, Heroes of Tome and Temple, and Heroes of Nature and Lore, and they say most likely 3 themes will come our from each article.

From Rules of Three 05/16/2011 article:

good news to me, looks like they won't abandon MCing. Hopefully it applies to other E-classes as well Very Happy

October: In the Works

They finally previewed them Pixies. Also witches, which is unclear what base class they'll use for it. Although it will be most likely Wizard, seeing primary stats are Int and Wis.

Secrets of the Ninja on Dragon 404

DDi exclusive, so I can only assume some details based on the discussion at Char Ops. Thread here.

*It's an executioner assassin alternate class feature to Guilds. Will gain proficiency for shurikens and Kusari-gama (or chain and sickle).
*Kusari-gama is a double weapon, light blade on one end, flail on the other end. +2 prof on both ends, 1d8 damage die. Primary end is defensive and reach, secondary end is offhand. (not 100% sure with the details here)
*at wills will be:
--triple attack with shuriken, each with different targets.
--whirling kusari-gama: 2 attacks on same target. if both hits, prone.
--Ninja-to Rush: you can use it as an mba when charging, and it says if you've jumped this turn you gain combat advantage on the target, so therefore you're basically getting free combat advantage by jump-charging. only with a shortsword

More tricks and shinanegans are discussed, feel free to post your thoughts and opinion.

October seems to be themed as Oriental Adventures month, and I think there's a samurai and sohei theme coming up as well.
