Posted: Sun Apr 22, 2007 5:47 pm Post subject: New Eberron Campaign: Cry of the Dragonheart |
|
Hey, guys, I decided to run a new Eberron campaign, and I'm calling it the "Cry of the Dragonheart". I guess it would be a summer campaign in addition to Dark Sun and Jaykie's campaign. For starters, my campaign would begin at ecl 3. I would like to know first who are interested in joining, so that I can set it up.
I require a minimum of 4 players and a maximum of 6. It's a swashbuckling style adventure. All corebooks are in, including the Complete series (if you have something from Complete Champion, why not?),plus any Eberron sources you have. No PrC's from Faerun, and no 3.0 classes and PrC's. Those taking summer notify me at once tomorrow. Others can PM me.
The story prologue, I'll post tomorrow. |

First off, welcome aboard mnightsilver!
To those who do not know this whippersnapper, mnightsilver is mark.
About the campaign hmmm ....
I am still undecided if I am going to join other campaigns. Lots of campaigns around huh?
Quote: | All corebooks are in, including the Complete series |
Corebooks are PHB, DMG, and MM. Maybe you mean splatbooks and themebooks.
And you may also want to tell us the power level of your campaign. |

That's why I'm inquiring... Jaykie says that his campaign has too many people in it, and i'm interested in changing that by running my own campaign. Otherwise, I'd be running this campaign 1st Sem. I'll ask the people tomorrow.
Besides, there's still a monday slot, and if ever, I'm taking in new players aka the noobs. |

I wanna play! I mean, other than DS, I'm not playing anything right now. ECL 3? Can do, will do. Sign me up! XD
I would like to play alongside some of the noobs, though. I wanna be able to teach them some of the things that I've learned in the short time that I've been playing, and also teach them some of the tricks that I, as their DM, don't really tell them about. _________________ And I'm still, still longing. So guys, tomorrow's the start of my campaign. I hope your characters are ready. I'm taking the Tuesdays and Fridays slot. For now I'll post the campaign's primary adventure hook.
998 YK, Arcanix, Aundair: It's harvest moon, and a festival is being held under the watch of the magestic towers of the Arcane congress. Prosperity fills the village. There are wine in every barrel, bread in every plate, and plenty of roasted boar to go around. The village men shout, "Bring in the dancing girls, for the God of Harvest has blessed us!"
Meanwhile, in the Queen's room in Fairhold, in Fairhaven, a strong wind blows the windows open. Queen Auralia ir'Wynarn abruptly awakes. Shadows that seem to dance among the walls surround her. Among the swirling shadows, a large figure emerges. The lady Auralia screams, but it seems as though no one can hear her. The figure whispers "The dead warriors of the east... The dark king is amidst... A prince of songs... He watches... For Three is One... One has been found... It beats... Life..."
Suddenly, a burst of dark energy overwhelms the Queen, as an image forms in her mind. It starts out as a large mass of what seems to be made of black crystal. "It's beautiful!", she cried. The thing that the image is showing is grandiose, full of power, full of life. Then, the image shatters. Three of what seem to be black crystals now surround Queen Auralia. She wants to grab them, to wield the power they posses. But when she tried to touch one of them, all of the crystals, together with the shadows that surround the walls of the Queen's room, vanish. Tears run down the lady Auralia's eyes.
Back in Arcanix, a band of explorers has arrived. With them, a mysterious chest pulsates with immense power. The Aundairians of Arcanix gaze in awe, as the chest is sent before the hosts of the festival: the Dragonmarked Houses. "What is it?" a dwarf of House Kundarak asked. One of the explorers replied exhaustedly. "We've have found it!", he said. "It is the Heart! The great Dragonheart! The Dragonheart of Eberron!"

By the way, please take note of character background. I want my players to have a background, most importantly a Region of origin. Since tomorrow's just the beginning, I'll guide you noobs on this. We'll develop your characters as the game goes on, and I'll continue to post story blurbs here every now and then.
Remember, the campaign is every Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3pm onwards. _________________ "When I thought I was alone, I found love..." |

Friday is for BJ's campaign. The only other day is Thursday, so there.
It's fun! I do like using Pitina. She's apparently fairly useful, even at this level... :3 _________________ And I'm still, still longing. Still cold... so cold. |

Ok. So the first day of campaign went well. Although my rogue fighters were actually made on the fly, I actually managed to run them. That's good.
Anyway, I'm now going to post the new events in the campaign.
After the attack of the so called "Daggercross Rogues" and the theft of the Dragonheart, our adventurers are being called to a gathering. As of the moment, the Festival of Arawai is postponed for a more important matter. There's a huge commotion among the representatives of the Dragonmarked houses: nobody actually knows where to find the Daggercross. Rumor has it that the Daggercross Rogues is a small band of half-elves located at the borders of the Eldeen Reaches and Aundair. Unfortunately, the information ends there.
However, it's still very important to retrieve the Dragonheart of Eberron. The mere possession of the stone can be a major breakthrough for Aundairian scholars, especially those from the Arcane congress. The stone might be the key to unearthing ancient secrets of Eberron itself.
And so, it is suggested that our party of seven adventurers, who showed great skills in fighting the Daggercross, are the ones to be sent to search for the infamous bandits at the outskirts of Aundairian territory. For a start, they head north, hoping that it would bring them near to the Daggercross hideout and ultimately, the Dragonheart.
Meanwhile, in the minds of these adventurers lie questions unanswered. Who is that guy from the lightning rail who seemed to keep hiding his true identity? Is he an ally, or is he the source of all the troubles our adventurers are facing? Who caused the ogre to attack at the lightning rail station? What is the Dragonheart of Eberron? And ultimately, why don't we ask all this from the DM?
They'll never know... _________________ "When I thought I was alone, I found love..." |

By the way, I'm starting another thread dedicated for the characters. I want you to post your characters' hooks there. And I want them to develop eventually throughout the game, not just as an efficient combatant, but also as a good flavored character.
NPC encounter note: Devrin Raptorclaw, Prince of the Daggercross Rogues
Since you haven't met him intimately yet, I'm not going to post any story as of now. You do know however, that he favors fighting with two daggers and illusions. Intuitively, he is the one that you saw taking the Dragonheart. Whether he's good or bad, it doesn't matter. I'll just let you guys speculate on him. For now, here's a clinch: His current build is Rogue x/ Beguiler y. Some of you might already have an idea of where he's headed to...
By the way, I liked my idea of a projected major image exploding into confetti once discovered. I also liked it exploding with the effects of a jester's laugh. Hehehe. _________________ "When I thought I was alone, I found love..." |

Chaos Confetti!
Hehe. 2 damage on a crit is sad. I want my wild shape, so I can start moving into the fray a bit more.
Character backgrounds, should add a bit more flavor, and helps in RP, I suppose. Do we need to post current stats, like in new selentia? |

...The congregation at the night of the Festival of Arawai ended quite abruptly. It was decided that the council of Dragonmarked representatives send the adventurers to track down the Daggercross Rogues. They slept the rest of the night through after a long, exhausting day.
The next day, our party of adventurers prepare themselves before they head out of Arcanix. Thorn Drumheller decides to let his companions leave first while he settles his primary business for Karrnath. The human rogue, David, apparently has stayed overnight in a cathouse. When the ladies found out that our charming rogue has no gold to pay for their services, he is made to clean the house's horse stable. That horse smell will sure stay for hours. Unfortunately, Maku, the kobold sorcerer, oversleeps and is left without notice. If Thorn remembers to wake him up, maybe he'll be able to join the rest of their group. Thorn will definitely catch up.
And so four of the adventurers leave Arcanix first: Pitina, gnome illusionist of House Sivis; Kleine, druid of the Eldeen Reaches; Fresno, cleric of Dol Arrah; and Xan, Karrnathi military underdog.
Information has it that the Daggercross are headed north to Duskwood. Thanks to powerful scrying magic of Aundair's Royal Eyes, they've been seen passing by the road to Passage and straight into the Eldritch Groves. The Daggercross are still skillful beguilers, however, and are hard to monitor with simple divinations. It is up to our group of adventurers to find the Daggercross, capture the so called Prince, and retrieve the stolen Dragonheart.
Since our adventurers took some time to prepare, it is apparent that the Daggercross is ahead of them by miles. However, sights of hooded figures with peculiar rings lurk about the shadows of the forest. It is suspected that these blokes are Daggercross assigned to keep their trail hidden from followers through illusion magic. However, the forest of Eldritch Groves is known for hobgoblin bandits that aim to rob any unfortunate traveler that camp out in the forest.
As Fresno, Kleine, Pitina and Xan stride by the Road to Passage on foot, the druid Kleine traces tracks leading towards the Eldritch Groves by the river. "You see something, Kleine?", asks Xan in a very assertive manner. Kleine pauses a moment, looks down the grassy trail, and gazes straight at the edge of the forest. "The tracks lead there." He walks ahead, leading the way. Suddenly, he feels unnerved. "Something's not right..." _________________ "When I thought I was alone, I found love..." |

Kleine is suddenly surrounded by large trees. He seems to be somewhere in the middle of the forest, and his three companions are nowhere to be found. "Where am I? Where are you, guys?" He seems to be alone, but in his mind he knows that this is the work of some magic. "What sorcery is this?" Unfortunately, he is unable to tell exactly how to undo this spell.
Meanwhile, Pitina notices that something is different with Kleine. "The track goes this way, follow me," the druid said. Pitina, realizing that the Kleine they're seeing is just an illusion, speaks in her usual timid voice. "Whatever you do, don't follow him. It's just a trick." Hearing this, Fresno and Xan stays put as they watch the illusory Kleine run towards the river and dive into the brisk water. Fresno laughs. "That was pathetic. Good work, Pitina." Pitina just gazes back with her hazy, gnomish eyes.
Xan decides to shout. "Kleine, where are you!" Kleine immediately hears the voice of his companion. He decides to follow the voice. A few moments later, Kleine bumps into something. With a loud clunk, his vision clears off the illusion. In front of him is Xan, surprised of his sudden reappearance. "I hope that doesn't happen again..." _________________ "When I thought I was alone, I found love..." |

|
The four companions continue to delve into the forest. It's dusk, the sun is setting, and darkness is at hand. Kleine continues to follow the tracks as he leads the others deeper into the Eldritch Groves. Everyone is warry. Nobody knows when the Daggercross will strike, and neither do the four adventurers know what more tricks are laid before them.
Somewhere among the dancing shadows of the forest, Pitina and Kleine hear whispering voices. "You will not find us. The Daggercross is unseen. The Prince will not allow you to reach him."
Without notice, daggers strike at Fresno, Xan, and Kleine. Kleine has managed to dodge one of the invisible assailants, but Fresno and Xan are hit. "Daggercross! This is an ambush!", Kleine shouts out in pain. The attackers have revealed themselves. There are currently four of them, and all of them carry the usual daggers of the infamous Daggercross. Xan strikes back at one of them and hits with his military sword. Fresno decides to do the same, but his target manage to evade his halbred.
"Let me help you!", cries Kleine. He whispers a few mystical words, and the winds blow stronger among the tall trees. Visages of snakes fly off his direction toward his allies. They seem to merge with the combatants' aura. Instantly, Xan and Fresno, including Kleine himself, become as swift as serpents and strike at their attackers. This time, Fresno hits his target and strikes one of the rogues hard at the brow. The rogue limps and drops. Xan does the same, this time hitting again with his longsword. With his mighty swing, another Daggercross falls to the ground.
Pitina, seeing her allies close into victory, chants words of wizardry. Instantly, a flash of rainbow colors spray out of her fingertips, hitting the two rogues still standing. Unfortunately, only one of them is affected, which drops weapons and stares blankly into the sky. _________________ "When I thought I was alone, I found love..." |

Seeing that they're alone, the last Daggercross decide to escape. They wave their fingers, whisper a few arcane words, and disappear. The four companions are disgruntled. _________________ "When I thought I was alone, I found love..." |

For my players who are reading my story updates, I'm sorry that the actual campaign is not as detailed as this. I'm not that good at thinking of words on the fly. If ever, just comment on my recent posts, so that there'd be continuous conversation outside the campaign. Tell me if it's good or not, or whether I should add anything.
At the end of the campaign, I'm planning to compile everything here and print it as an org property. Cool, no? And from this point on, I'm encouraging all the other DMs to do the same so that next time, we'd have printed material of our campaigns. Is this good or not?
If you're reading this now and saw that the post above is unfinished, don't worry. I'm about to finish it. It's just that I have to end my internet session so that I could study. I'm still a student, you know. _________________ "When I thought I was alone, I found love..." |

He hasn't made the part where Fresno tried to put one of the captured daggercross lackey's pants down after hanging him from a tree. Fresno and Xan had a moral argument which ended when then were cut short by Pitina, who was my bunk buddy in our sleeping shift. _________________ "I should mug people to this song. Freakin' hilarious. Yes, this semi-official chronicler job sounds pretty damned fun. I second the motion to try this in other campaigns. Maybe in BJ's epic Chalice campaign too?

If you want to go chronicler, go ahead.
LordofPwnage is already the chronicler for the NS campaign, so if ever, I might adopt a similar style on the epic one. (ie, giving PC's jobs). The chalice takes a damn long time to prepare, I don't think I'll have time to write down the backstory myself _________________ Nosfecatu Publishing |

Aside: Daggercross Lore
The Daggercross have been trouble for Aundair for years. They are known as spies and hired thieves for major factions all over Aundair. It is unknown whether they also work for other organizations outside the continent. The fact remains that these rogues sabotage trade and business relationships in Aundairian territory.
Information on the Daggercross is scarce. The rogues have been found scrounging different parts of Aundair, but their exact whereabouts are unknown. Not even the renowned scrying capabilities of the Royal Eyes of Aundair have revealed the Daggercross hideout, since the group of bandits is also known for their illusions and skill in concealing themselves. No one can tell when and where the Daggercross will strike. This endangers Aundair's primary interests.
Further information on the Daggercross leader is also obscure. Rumors has it that the head and founder of the rogues, frequently refered to as the "prince", is a skilled magical trickster. Word is spread all over Aundair of a half-elf named Devrin Raptorclaw who dictates every action of the rogues. It is known that the so-called "prince" actively handles all Daggercross agenda. Those who have fought with the Daggercross reported of a skilled combatant and a master illusionist among the group.
No one has been intentionally killed by the Daggercross, however, and the infamous bandits always leave immediately after they have taken what they came for. If combat is imminent, the bandits fight until they're objective is accomplished, then use illusion magic to mislead any of their opponents.
A few Daggercross have been captured, though. None of them revealed any useful information. The only thing useful taken from the prisoners is a ring. Every Daggercross wears a ring that bears a peculiar insignia, now thought to be the Daggercross insignia. Magic has been detected from each ring, but simple divinations are unable to determine what specific type of spell envelops the rings.
The Daggercross insignia pictures two daggers, one with its blade pointing to the north and the other to the east. The daggers form a cross, hence the bandits' name. At the center of the insignia where the two daggers intersect is a circular emblem bearing markings similar to the Dragonmarks of Eberron. What the insignia means is yet to be discovered.
The last attack of the Daggercross was at the Festival to Arawai in Arcanix. Stolen from the event was an artifact of legend, the Dragonheart of Eberron, which was brought to the festival from Xen'drik by a band of explorers sent by the Queen. For Aundair, especially for the Dragonmarked Houses, the attack was the last draw. The Daggercross must be captured together with its prince, Devrin Raptorclaw. The Dragonheart must be retrieved at all costs, for it might be the key to unbound secrets of Eberron itself. _________________ "When I thought I was alone, I found love..." |
