Magic's got a ton of sets and I just can't seem to figure out which ones are currently legal for Type 2 play and aren't. See, I plan to take some advice from the "Best way to build a deck" thread over there and try building me a Red/Black from scratch (since my Black/Blue in the deckbuilding thread looks...outdated).
Now, I know that Type 2 decks'll never reach the power levels of Type 1s and it's a bit useless to build a Type 2 if you plan to stick to casual play but...playing with a "currently legal" deck's just my preference. Well, if it does turn out THAT underpowered I'll probably just stick to Type 1. ![Laughing](images/smiles/icon_lol.gif) |

Depends on what format you want to play in... Standard (the most commonly played format) is composed of Shards of Alara, Conflux, Alara Reborn, Magic 2010 and Zendikar starting next week. Extended, the bigger rotating format includes all starting from Mirrodin onwards. |

Oh wow, that's...not a lot. -_-
Will the Alara stuff stay legal for the entire arc? |

Alara block stays legal until October of next year. Zendikar is Type-2 legal until the October of next next year. So, if you were interested in playing Standard then I suggest you invest more in Zendikar rather than Alara. |

I would suggest on investing lots on Zendikar, especially the fetch lands. Enemy color fetch lands can be really used not only in standard, but also extended format. |

Hmm. Would it be more feasible to get a starter set or take the other thread's suggestion and build the pieces from scratch?
And considering the good stuff I'm hearing about Zendikar, won't that make it harder to get my paws on some cards since it seems to be a universally good set? ![Confused](images/smiles/icon_confused.gif) |

If you're just started playing Magic, then I recommend you purchase a starter deck. But if you have some experience building decks, then singles is the way to go. |

Still, go for the singles. You'll never know how devastating a deck would be until you've played the cards.
As for the T2 format...Starting 10/2, Alara Block (Shards of Alara, Conflux, Alara Reborn), M10 (Magic 2010 Core Set) and Zendikar Block (Zendikar, Worldwake (Jan 2010) and New Phyrexia (soon, probably May 2010)) would fill in.
And don't forget that another Core Set would bulge in next year M2011 so the Alara block might rotate earlier in standard (and have 2 core sets in one T2 format). Darn it, Magic! ![Razz](images/smiles/icon_razz.gif) |

Oh and also, yourself being a T1 player, you might be interested to know that there is a chance to get Vintage-legal power cards in ZEN boosters. Current finds include Taiga, Mox Diamond, Mox Jet, Mox Pearl, LED, Sinkhole, and Ancestral Recall. Note however that the conditions of these cards aren't mint, thus indicating they aren't reprints (reserve list yadda yadda).
The chances of getting one, though, aren't too good. There's no cut-and-dried rate, but it's anywhere between 1 booster in 20 boxes to 1 booster in 50 boxes. But hey, if you're feeling lucky...
