Okay, here's a game that has been brewing in my head for quite some time now.

To introduce the upcoming Dark Sun Campaign Setting to us, the Hobbygamers, I have decided to run a game based on the first novel of the Prism Pentad Series, "The Verdant Passage." The game itself covers levels 8-12, and pre-generated characters based on the main protagonists of the story will be made available.

I think this is the perfect way to welcome Dark Sun to the 4th Edition, as the DS Campaign Setting will start off right after the events of the Verdant Passage.

Verdant Passage Primer wrote:
The thousand-year reign of the evil sorcerer king Kalak is coming to an end.

But the city of Tyr -- like the rest of the world of Athas -- has been left a magic-blasted ruin, a desolate place of dust, blood, and fear.

All that's left is desperation.

And revolution.

I'm thinking of running it twice a month, most likely on Saturdays. In addition, I will adopt an inherent bonus system, an idea that came from DMG2, with some modifications:

Quote:
*All PCs gain a +1 bonus to attack rolls and damage rolls at levels 2,7,12,17,22,and 27, and gains +1d4 damage on critical hits on those levels as well. These bonuses are considered enhancement bonuses, so it does not stack with any magic weapons/implements that may be used.

*All PCs gain a +1 bonus to all defenses at levels 4,9,14,19,24,and 29. These are considered as enhancement bonuses, and thus will not stack with any neck slot items.

In addition to the initial 4 pregens, I will allow a 5th player to make a level 8 character.

In the next few posts, I will detail each of the 4 pregens.\

NOTICE: All artworks are copyrighted by Brom. I cropped them to focus on specific characters, but have otherwise done no modifications whatsoever. Anyway, I'm giving credit where credit's due. You can find more of Brom's works (though I found these ones elsewhwere) at Brom Art.

Agis of Asticles

Image by Brom, and taken from Dark Sun Gallery. Used for non-profit.

Agis is a nobleman of the House of Asticles and a senator of Tyr. Like many nobles, he has attended cumpolsory lessons under the Way. Unlike many nobles, however, he took the studies seriously and is currently one of the most gifted in the art of psionics.

The Senate of Tyr theoretically keeps the authority of King Kalak in check, but it has been many generations since the senate wielded any real power ovet the thousand-year-old king. These days, senators that oppose King Kalak have tendencies of showing up dead days later.

Lately, Agis has been one of the senators pushing for the construction of a Tyrian army. This is in response to increasing reports of The Dragon, considered a mere myth for the longest time, approaching Tyr. In response, Kalak instead started the construction of a gigantic ziggurat that he believes will protect them from the dragon. Relocating the workers of the iron mines of Tyr (the only known source of metal in Athas), the king is in danger of not only doing nothing against The Dragon, but of disrupting trade and inciting war with the other states in Tyr.

The final blow came when the king commanded the templars to seize all slaves owned by the nobles for the completion of his ziggurat. With the entire economy of Tyr at a halt, the senators are about to convene secretly on what must be done.

Neeva

Image by Brom, and taken from Dark Sun Gallery. Used for non-profit.

When you talk of the Gladiatorial matches in Tyr, then you would at one point in the conversation talk about Rikus and Neeva. Of all the matched pairs in the pits, only they can fight so well together that sometimes, you'd have to wonder if they are just one warrior with two bodies to kill with. At the completon of King Kalak's ziggurat, there will be a pit fight, and the matched pair that wins the battle will be freed. Everyone's bets are on Rikus and Neeva.

Sadly for Neeva, it is always Rikus and Neeva that get mentioned in the pit fights, not Neeva and Rikus. Rikus dreams of freedom, and he dreams of the day when he can strangle the neck of their owner, Tithian. These are good ambitions in life, and Neeva supports her fighting partner in these endeavors. When freed, she can finally have the right of ownership, and the first thing she seeks to own is Rikus's love.

Until then, however, she will struggle with the fact that she cannot demand ownership. Rikus does show her affection - they share a bed, after all. But the vigorous half-human has eyes on other slave girls as well. This does not bother her... Until Sadira came.

Rikus shows more affection for Sadira than he did all the other slave girls; he perhaps favors Sadira as much as he favors Neeva. Neeva dislikes the half-elf wench with fervor. Quite unfortunately, however, Sadira has recently saved Rikus from certain death, at great risk to the half-elf's own life. Sadira has disappeared, but Neeva knows Rikus well enough to know that he will seek her as soon as he wakes from his injuries.

Rikus

Image by Brom, and taken from Dark Sun Gallery. Used for non-profit.

Rikus is a mul - half-dwarf, half-human hybrids that are valued as slaves for their unbelievable toughness. They are astounding warriors for the pits, and Rikus is no exception. Indeed, he is the Tyrian gladiator, the betting man's favorite to earn his freedom in King Kalak's games.

Originally bred by the noble house of Lubar from the city-state of Urik, Rikus was sold when he failed to perform well in his first matches. Only when he became the possession of high templar Tithian did he begin to shine in battle, perhaps through sheer determination, or perhaps with his matched pair Neeva as inspiration. In time, he became well-known for his speed, strength, guts, and an outright refusal to stay down.

Rikus cares for the well-being of his friends, and recently, he almost died because of this softness. Tithian's beast keeper Sizzkus was killed by one of the vicious animals to be shown during King Kalak's upcoming event. Sizzkus was a good friend of Rikus, and he decided to claim the corpse from the monster's maw.

While Rikus could match the strength of the beetle-like monster, the creature known as the Gaj began to assault him mentally. Unused to psionic battles, Rikus fell, and would have been slain like his friend if the slave girl Sadira did not intervene.

Sadira of the Veiled Alliance

Image by Brom, and taken from Dark Sun Gallery. Used for non-profit.

Sadira's mother made the mistake of falling in love with a notorius elven rogue named Faenaeyon. In return for this unconditional affection, Faenaeyon all but abandoned the poor woman to be captured on one fateful raid on the elven markets. Sold into slavery, she soon gave birth to Sadira. And throughout the half-elf's life, her only memory of her mother has been that of an old, apologetic woman who died a slave.

She vowed to never share the same fate.

Her opportunity to break the bonds of slavery came in the hands of a mysterious old animal herder that her master Tithian employed. Seeing potential in Sadira, the man (who called himself Ktandeo) began testing her with moral quandaries and tests of courage.

Then, one morning while they sent the current lot of animals to the games celebrating the next year, Ktandeo asked Sadira if she wanted to learn magic. The curious Sadira agreed, and soon after, she was a member of the Veiled Alliance, where she learned not only magic, but (through the efforts of Ktandeo's "daughter" Catalyna) also how to make the most of her beauty.

Katandeo and Catalyna eventually left Tithian's employ, but they decided to keep Sadira there to keep her eyes on Tithian. The Veiled Alliance has also instructed her to get as close to the gladiator Rikus as possible, for he factors into their plans for the future.

All was going well - No one suspects her to be a wizard, Rikus is all but infatuated with her, and her freedom from the bonds of slavery was imminent... The Rikus decides to avenge the death of some nikaal named Sizzkus. The gladiator would have died had she not intervened, and she figured that whatever plans the alliance havefor him, it requires him to be alive. But in saving him she revealed herself as an arcanist in front of many witnesses. And as only the king and his templars are allowed to wield magic, she is now in mortal peril.

She must find her mentor Ktandeo quick.

As a final note, the sheets above are a little hard to read, but I can provide pdf/hard copies to whoever decides to play.

So, anyone interested? Very Happy

dark_axis, unfortunately, I will only allow you to make a character once I'm secure that you're the 5th player. So far you're only the third.

Basically, what I'm saying is that if you want to be the one to get the custom character, you gotta convince 2 more people to pick pregens. Wink

ADD: I'm glad to see there's interest! Now, to sound off - Do you prefer to game on Saturdays or Sundays?

*If you guys choose Saturdays, I can do it more often as there will be no conflict with Revan's Eberron game. I suspect we might get to 3 sessions a EDIT: month. You may need to agree to gaming at the OGM once or twice, though.

*On Sundays, I will give priority to Revan's Eberron game, as I am committed to that first and foremost. So it will be less often than normal.

Planned first session is mid-February, and yes, I ecpect this to take full bloom during the summer break.

So, sound off! Very Happy

I'd like to join, but I don't think I can commit to game weekly, with my current situation (jobless & moneyless). Most especially when summer break comes, as most likely games would be much more frequent.

Thank you for the forthrightness, erwin. That's of course better than committing, and then not showing up. Smile Nevertheless, I hope you find a way to make your situation better. Income=ability to game in your case, and I encourage you to never give up.

If only so we can have more DnD. XD

Hmm, the game is most likely going to be at my place, and I am currently leaning towards Saturday for game day.

Hooray! That makes four players.

Assuming juaberman is taking Neeva, do you know anyone *coughrknightingalecough* who's willing to take Sadira? Very Happy

I'm having Character Builder problems right now, so I haven't fixed the sheets yet. But in case you weren't following the Dark Sun thread, I will be adopting the weapon breakage rules:

Weapon-Breaking Rules wrote:
...for those that are into this kind of thing. Weapon breakage rules are as follows: if you roll a 1 on an attack with a weapon, you can reroll it. If you’re using a non-metal weapon, it automatically breaks after the attack if you do so. If you’re using a metal weapon, it breaks on a roll of 1-5.

I'm still thinking about the defiling mechanic, but I will most likely be shifting to that, too.

As for the schedule: February's been veery hectic for me so far. The first chance I'll get to DM will be on Feb27, and I may be reserving that for the bring-your-gf-to-dnd daythat oghma and I are cooking up (more on that in a future post). If that doesn't push through for some odd reason, then we'll have the first game day then.

Ah, by the way, I'm thinking of running this under the D&D rewards program. So bring DCI numbers. Wink

If you don't have one, don't fret - I can give out up to five.

While the D&D Rewards program offers smaller points for non-LFR games, those are still points. I will probably report everything via my wizards blog. I'm sure there will be a certain amount of interest. Very Happy

Okay, knightingale. I will hand you the slot if any of the people here back out. Okay! Let's see if I got this right:

juaberman - Neeva
Revan - Agis
Poisonous Magic Pie - Rikus
Infinityzero - Sadira
dark_axis - 5th character

Since guys will be playing the female characters, I'll downplay the romantic tension so as to avoid... unpleasantries.

I need you guys to post "confirm" here within the next two days, otherwise you'll lose your slot.

As a reminder, it will be twice a month at most (sometimes we'll only get to game once a month due to scheduling, but we'll always game at least 1/month). Saturdays or Sundays, with a preference for the former. Default location is my place at Mandaluyong, but on days coinciding with the OGM, it will be held there.

Ask questions ASAP if you can. Otherwise, the first game is on February 20 (saturday).

PS. By posting "confirm," you give me legal rights to pursue and flay the quintessence from your soul if you consistently don't show up for the game. Evil or Very Mad

Aww, man, and here I was looking forward to the romantic tension (and all assorted unpleasantries with them being piloted by male players). 8B

BJ, do you mind if I voyeur in on your sessions? :B I quite enjoyed sitting in on 'Dragon's Heart,' and the setting for Dark Sun has piqued my curiosity about it.

Tangent: What, haha, I never knew Brom could draw like that. I'm mostly familiar with that creeptastic "children's" book he came out with, "The Plucker."

@BJ: DM's assistant. As I've noticed, that makes the game run a bit smoother, but it also makes the combats a bit deadlier. Smile)

@Knightingale: Lol. knock yourself out. It would have been hilarious, but unfortunately, I don't think anyone in the group swings that way, or is that good at RP. Yet. XD

Alright, all 5 players are confirmed! We're ready for some gaming. Very Happy For the moment, I want to discuss two things:

1) Location - as I mentioned, the default is my place in Mandaluyong. Those who need directions PM me to ask for directions (don't forget to tell me where you're coming from!). I would want to avoid OGM day if I can, but since that event's been erratic as of late, there's the very large possibility that we will occasionally coincide with them. In such a case, we will game on SM Marikina.

2) Time - My preferred gaming time is 1pm-5pm. Please do be on time, but do clear your schedules 'til 7pm to make way for the occasional latecomer. Be advised, I am not fond of waiting. So if you guys think 1pm will be a problem, speak up now or forever hold your peace.

3) Food - Now while I'm the host, I run on a "Feed the DM" basis, so don't expect dinner or anything of the sort. However, I do believe that we have to plan our food beforehand. So my system will be a DM-excempt potluck. Everyone is required to contribute something of at least 50peso value but with no upper limit. It's your choice if you want to be extravagant, but the lower limit is there to make sure no one brings a single pack of Boy Bawang and expect to have upheld their part of the food bill.

Oh, and it would be nice if you post what you plan to bring, so we don't get showered by donuts like in a typical gradeschool Christmas Party.

Questions? Objections?

Something tells me my default will be coke and fish crackers, courtesy of Puregold.

Given my default wake-up time is around 11ish, I might occasionally cut it close, but it seems doable.
